03:05.842 --> 03:09.224
[SPEAKER_01]: With that being said, let's quit the Gabby Gabby get to the stabby stabby.

03:09.244 --> 03:11.185
[SPEAKER_01]: Let's break down this week's case.

03:11.965 --> 03:20.210
[SPEAKER_01]: On February 9th, 1999, 911 dispatchers and Newman Lake Washington received an urgent call at around 8.30 a.m.

03:21.151 --> 03:25.013
[SPEAKER_01]: According to the person on the phone, their neighbor's house was engulfed in flames.

03:25.813 --> 03:28.615
[SPEAKER_01]: This was the home of the wood family.

03:28.735 --> 03:39.402
[SPEAKER_01]: 43-year-old Robert Bob Wood had moved in after his divorce, and he lived in the residence with two of his six children, 16-year-old Teresa and 11-year-old Christopher.

03:40.371 --> 03:48.943
[SPEAKER_01]: Christopher was an energetic kid, and he spent time building forts, riding bikes, playing video games on his PlayStation, just normal 11-year-old stuff.

03:49.484 --> 03:55.893
[SPEAKER_01]: Christopher was three years old when his parents divorced, and he was sent to live with his father shortly before starting third grade.

03:56.898 --> 04:05.305
[SPEAKER_01]: Now, on this day, firefighters rushed to the scene to battle the blaze, but it's what they soon learned that made a dangerous situation even worse.

04:06.185 --> 04:21.638
[SPEAKER_01]: Bob was notified of the fire while on his way to work, and he told authorities that Theresa had left for school a little after A&M, and that he had left for work shortly after at around 820, leaving Christopher in the home alone, before he was to head out to school.

04:22.761 --> 04:29.845
[SPEAKER_01]: Christopher's principal heard about the fire and immediately contacted the police to inform them that he had never arrived at school that day.

04:30.345 --> 04:36.268
[SPEAKER_01]: The situation had become dire, with firefighters believing that Christopher may have been inside the burning building.

04:37.048 --> 04:40.750
[SPEAKER_01]: But when the flames were extinguished, there was no sign of the 11-year-old.

04:41.550 --> 04:44.852
[SPEAKER_01]: Christopher wasn't inside the home and he was nowhere to be found.

04:45.893 --> 04:51.175
[SPEAKER_01]: Bob would arrive back at the house at around 1030 a.m. nearly two hours after the fire

04:52.903 --> 05:05.732
[SPEAKER_01]: He told investigators that his son may have started the fire as he had been caught playing with matches only a short time before, believing that Christopher escaped the home but was afraid to come back and scare the trouble that he may be in.

05:06.757 --> 05:11.300
[SPEAKER_01]: So the police and neighbors came together, organizing a massive search for Christopher.

05:12.081 --> 05:17.444
[SPEAKER_01]: If the child was hiding in the woods nearby, exposure to the winter weather could be potentially deadly.

05:18.185 --> 05:19.846
[SPEAKER_01]: But there was no sign of the boy.

05:20.486 --> 05:24.969
[SPEAKER_01]: However, the next day a man had car trouble while driving his son to school.

05:25.570 --> 05:29.633
[SPEAKER_01]: So they pulled over on a road about 15 miles from the wood family home.

05:30.313 --> 05:33.996
[SPEAKER_01]: And while sitting in the car, the child spotted something in the snow.

05:34.856 --> 05:37.358
[SPEAKER_01]: a blue Dallas Cowboys backpack.

05:38.419 --> 05:45.104
[SPEAKER_01]: When examined on the outside was a name, Christopher Wood, inside were the boy's roller blades.

05:46.163 --> 05:47.984
[SPEAKER_01]: A Christopher was nowhere in sight.

05:48.704 --> 05:52.226
[SPEAKER_01]: Meanwhile investigators were trying to find the cause of the house fire.

05:52.966 --> 06:02.690
[SPEAKER_01]: Specialized dogs were brought in, but they found no traces of any accelerants, but it did appear that the fire had started on a sofa, which dove against the wall in the living room.

06:03.391 --> 06:05.852
[SPEAKER_01]: Which to investigators could mean arson.

06:06.913 --> 06:11.037
[SPEAKER_01]: By this time, two days had passed, and there was still no sign of the missing child.

06:11.738 --> 06:14.981
[SPEAKER_01]: But that would change on February 11, 1999.

06:15.642 --> 06:20.947
[SPEAKER_01]: Nearly 50 miles away, a road-grader operator was working on a deserted road.

06:21.688 --> 06:25.832
[SPEAKER_01]: The man stood up to adjust his jacket when he spotted something in a snow bank.

06:31.497 --> 06:39.222
[SPEAKER_01]: But ligature marks found on the boy's neck indicated that he'd been strangled to death at another location, his body being dumped in the snow after.

06:40.423 --> 06:47.007
[SPEAKER_01]: Christopher was covered in vomit and his shoes were on the wrong feet, suggesting that the child had not put them on himself.

06:48.128 --> 06:51.610
[SPEAKER_01]: But it was what investigators didn't find that was just as alarming.

06:52.645 --> 06:57.490
[SPEAKER_01]: There was nothing on Christopher's clothing that indicated he had started the fire inside his home.

06:58.051 --> 07:01.174
[SPEAKER_01]: There was also no sitting in the boys' lungs or on his hands.

07:01.935 --> 07:04.778
[SPEAKER_01]: Now, investigators had two crimes to solve.

07:05.478 --> 07:06.860
[SPEAKER_01]: Arson and Murder.

07:08.354 --> 07:10.835
[SPEAKER_01]: Meanwhile, the community mourn the loss of Christopher.

07:11.596 --> 07:19.861
[SPEAKER_01]: Classmates put together a collection of stories and memories, and teddy bears were collected in his honor, donated to shelters and families struck by tragedy.

07:20.581 --> 07:23.203
[SPEAKER_01]: And detectives vowed to find the person responsible.

07:23.703 --> 07:35.570
[SPEAKER_01]: Now there was no evidence that Christopher had been sexually assaulted, but there were sex offenders living in the area, so investigators started there, interviewing and eventually ruling those people out of suspects.

07:36.370 --> 07:39.531
[SPEAKER_01]: So they went back to the Wood Family's activity on the day of the fire.

07:40.511 --> 07:46.552
[SPEAKER_01]: They remembered that it took Bob a long time to return home after being notified, nearly two hours.

07:47.433 --> 07:55.654
[SPEAKER_01]: But when looking at the route that he would have taken, it should have only been about a 66-minute drive, leaving nearly an hour on a calendar for.

07:56.915 --> 08:02.356
[SPEAKER_01]: Something wasn't adding up, so investigators decided to take a closer look at Bob Wood.

08:03.320 --> 08:06.081
[SPEAKER_01]: and they found that he was living well beyond his means.

08:07.042 --> 08:15.306
[SPEAKER_01]: You see, Bob works in real estate and he earned about $100,000 a year, which, if you would just for inflation, is nearly $200,000 today.

08:16.046 --> 08:18.307
[SPEAKER_01]: But he was spending much, much more.

08:19.167 --> 08:24.390
[SPEAKER_01]: Benevading the family home with a new master bedroom complete with French windows and a jacuzzi.

08:25.330 --> 08:27.751
[SPEAKER_01]: Bob had also built a huge garage in the back,

08:31.772 --> 08:37.094
[SPEAKER_01]: when looking into his past, investigators found that would have filed for bankruptcy twice before.

08:37.914 --> 08:45.337
[SPEAKER_01]: He had also been convicted of theft in using someone else's social security number, along with a bank foreclosing on one of his former homes.

08:46.298 --> 08:51.740
[SPEAKER_01]: But it was what investigators learned about Bob's current employment situation that set off alarm bells.

08:52.180 --> 09:07.365
[SPEAKER_01]: You see, Bob had recently been fired from a local real estate company after being caught siphoning over a hundred thousand dollars from the business, stealing gas, building materials, and equipment, even using company money to make repairs to his personal vehicles.

09:08.565 --> 09:16.189
[SPEAKER_01]: Investigators also learned that Bob had three separate life insurance policies on Christopher, totaling $80,000.

09:16.529 --> 09:23.472
[SPEAKER_01]: And strangely, the paperwork for these policies were kept outside of the home at the time of the fire.

09:24.373 --> 09:33.297
[SPEAKER_01]: Additionally, a clerk at a local care and a store contacted the police, telling them that Bob Wood had dropped off some film to develop the day after the fire.

09:34.273 --> 09:38.037
[SPEAKER_01]: The photos were up the family home before and after the blaze.

09:38.718 --> 09:50.710
[SPEAKER_01]: Now, this may not seem unusual, especially for anyone who's ever had to file an insurance claim for something like this, but usually, the before photos and the after photos would be on separate roles of film.

09:51.511 --> 09:54.053
[SPEAKER_01]: These pictures were both taken on the same roll.

09:54.881 --> 10:01.667
[SPEAKER_01]: leading investigators to believe that Wood knew the fire was going to take place, causing him to take the before and after photos.

10:02.227 --> 10:13.517
[SPEAKER_01]: Detectives now believe that Bob Wood murdered his son before setting fire to his own home, hoping to collect both Christopher's life insurance policies and a payout from his home insurance company.

10:14.578 --> 10:16.380
[SPEAKER_01]: But they were going to need evidence.

10:17.061 --> 10:21.504
[SPEAKER_01]: So they decided to search the one section of the home that hadn't been damaged by the fire.

10:22.421 --> 10:24.663
[SPEAKER_01]: the luxurious garage that Bob had built.

10:25.764 --> 10:30.328
[SPEAKER_01]: And when inspecting one of Bob's sports cars, they noticed something on the rear bumper.

10:31.128 --> 10:35.292
[SPEAKER_01]: What appeared to be vomit, just like what was found on Christopher's body.

10:36.233 --> 10:41.077
[SPEAKER_01]: They also found similar stains in the back of the truck that Bob had been driving on the day of the fire.

10:42.131 --> 10:50.755
[SPEAKER_01]: Now, vomit can't be used to collect a DNA sample, but if you listen to last week's case, you'll know it can be used to determine what was eaten.

10:51.595 --> 10:57.258
[SPEAKER_01]: So the vomit on Christopher's body and the sample found on Bob's vehicles were sent for testing.

10:58.018 --> 11:00.300
[SPEAKER_01]: And both were found to contain the same thing.

11:01.200 --> 11:07.643
[SPEAKER_01]: When examined, forensic scientists found vegetable particles along with oat bran, flour, and starch,

11:12.336 --> 11:26.432
[SPEAKER_01]: all common ingredients and breakfast cereals, and when searching the wood home, investigators found a bag of marshmallow madeys, a generic version of Lucky Charms that I am very familiar with because that's what I ate growing up.

11:27.542 --> 11:33.664
[SPEAKER_01]: The same serial that Christopher's sister Theresa told police that her brother was eating on the day that he was killed.

11:34.344 --> 11:39.125
[SPEAKER_01]: Investigators now believe that Bob Wood strangled the son as he was eating breakfast.

11:39.765 --> 11:44.206
[SPEAKER_01]: Then, Christopher's body was transported from the home in the pickup truck.

11:44.867 --> 11:48.508
[SPEAKER_01]: But it was the question of how the body was moved that was nagging at them.

11:49.348 --> 11:53.029
[SPEAKER_01]: While searching the garage, Detective noticed the single trash can.

11:53.808 --> 11:59.030
[SPEAKER_01]: When speaking to neighbors, they learned that the family usually had two out on the curb on trash day.

11:59.971 --> 12:05.173
[SPEAKER_01]: Investigators knew they needed to find that missing can, so again, they spoke with Teresa.

12:20.285 --> 12:24.767
[SPEAKER_01]: She told detectives that the day after the fire, she and Boba gone to a car wash.

12:25.487 --> 12:28.629
[SPEAKER_01]: There, her dad spent time spraying out the bed of the truck.

12:29.389 --> 12:35.892
[SPEAKER_01]: And when investigators visited that particular wash, they found a discarded rubber trash can nearby.

12:36.553 --> 12:39.134
[SPEAKER_01]: The same type that was missing from the wood home.

12:39.854 --> 12:47.678
[SPEAKER_01]: But to be sure, forensic experts examined the two cans side by side, and both were found to have matching paint residue on them.

12:48.322 --> 12:51.160
[SPEAKER_01]: The kind left by, ray painting something nearby.

12:52.122 --> 12:59.848
[SPEAKER_01]: So if you've ever spray painted anything, you'll see anything nearby make it those flecks of paint on them just from the aerosol can.

13:00.368 --> 13:07.194
[SPEAKER_01]: Both of these trash cans had that matching paint splatter, which indicated this was the other can from Bob's home.

13:08.034 --> 13:11.917
[SPEAKER_01]: But it's what the examiner's found on the inside of the can that stood out.

13:12.598 --> 13:13.939
[SPEAKER_01]: Again, vomit.

13:14.699 --> 13:18.863
[SPEAKER_01]: And when tested against the previous samples, the food particles were a match.

13:19.800 --> 13:35.651
[SPEAKER_01]: Investigators also found shiny metallic particles, and when examined, those were a match to sequence found on Christopher's Dallas Cowboys backpack, meaning that after his murder, Christopher's body was placed inside the garbage can and loaded into the truck.

13:36.726 --> 13:41.089
[SPEAKER_01]: Investigators now needed the Thai Bob Wood to the area where the body was found.

13:41.830 --> 13:50.396
[SPEAKER_01]: So they pulled the cell phone records, and in no surprise, Bob cell phone was found to have pinged on towers in the area on the day of the fire.

13:51.056 --> 13:53.999
[SPEAKER_01]: Surprisingly, the ATF also got involved with the case.

13:54.679 --> 13:59.483
[SPEAKER_01]: You see, investigators believe that Bob set fires at the couch before leaving with Christopher's body.

14:06.032 --> 14:12.976
[SPEAKER_01]: Detectives needed to know if setting fire to the sofa could produce enough smoke and flame to be noticed in that 10-minute window.

14:13.916 --> 14:22.540
[SPEAKER_01]: So ATF agents purchase three identical couches that match the one inside the living room, setting each couch on fire in a controlled area.

14:23.041 --> 14:28.784
[SPEAKER_01]: The test showed that the sofa would burn hot enough to engulf the entire room in flames in just a matter of minutes.

14:34.303 --> 14:41.167
[SPEAKER_01]: On February 26, 1999, Robert Wood was arrested and charged with arson and first to remurder.

14:41.927 --> 14:47.971
[SPEAKER_01]: That same day, he was also charged for the theft of $105,000 from his former employer.

14:48.931 --> 14:57.096
[SPEAKER_01]: Now, while behind bars, Wood claimed as innocent, but the prosecution had done the work and built a very strong case against them.

14:58.243 --> 15:04.786
[SPEAKER_01]: Wood would be held on a $1.1 million bond and his trial was scheduled to begin on November 1, 1999.

15:06.267 --> 15:08.888
[SPEAKER_01]: But sadly, Bob would never stand trial.

15:09.829 --> 15:20.534
[SPEAKER_01]: On May 31st of that year, he was found dead inside of his jail cell, choosing to hang himself rather than face the consequences that came with choosing to take Christopher's life.

15:22.101 --> 15:25.523
[SPEAKER_01]: When investigating a cell, several notes were found inside.

15:26.284 --> 15:29.446
[SPEAKER_01]: Some were addressed to his attorney, others to family members.

15:30.167 --> 15:35.230
[SPEAKER_01]: But none of them contained a confession or any reason for committing such a terrible crime.

15:36.111 --> 15:40.174
[SPEAKER_01]: Sadly, gun Christopher's life was ended for $80,000.

15:40.794 --> 15:44.457
[SPEAKER_01]: And the person responsible would never face true justice.

15:45.257 --> 15:49.538
[SPEAKER_01]: So that's this week's case and as always, to close everything out, I just wanted to share some final thoughts.

15:49.638 --> 15:55.499
[SPEAKER_01]: So at the top of the show, I know that I had mentioned that this case absolutely infuriated me.

15:55.999 --> 15:59.019
[SPEAKER_01]: I was actually telling my wife about it before I did the recording.

15:59.059 --> 16:03.280
[SPEAKER_01]: It was just like, this Bob Wood has made me so mad.

16:04.100 --> 16:07.981
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, I've talked a lot about over the years, the fact that monsters are real.

16:08.501 --> 16:12.322
[SPEAKER_01]: And I think that this is a perfect example of that.

16:13.342 --> 16:14.662
[SPEAKER_01]: I am a father, right?

16:14.983 --> 16:22.865
[SPEAKER_01]: As I mentioned, we just celebrated Father's Day and the best part of the entire day for me was just get to do things with my daughter.

16:23.425 --> 16:26.486
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, going to this flashback is fun because I get to do it with her.

16:27.086 --> 16:30.507
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, going to the movies and going out to dinner was fun because I got to do it with her.

16:30.747 --> 16:41.811
[SPEAKER_01]: It's a day about celebrating fathers, but I think for fathers, it's celebrating the person or the little thing that you created that even allows you to celebrate that day.

16:42.682 --> 16:46.846
[SPEAKER_01]: And so when I think about my daughter, I think about those amazing things, right?

16:46.986 --> 16:58.856
[SPEAKER_01]: The fact that I get to be her protector, the fact that I get to help her grow and hopefully be the best person that she can be and, you know, seeing that she gets little pieces of

17:04.677 --> 17:11.319
[SPEAKER_01]: I've never been more invested in anything and the well-being of anything in my entire life than I am with my daughter.

17:12.139 --> 17:24.443
[SPEAKER_01]: And so to know that there is a person out there who not only is capable of murder but capable of murdering the thing that you're supposed to be the most protective of and you do it

17:25.204 --> 17:39.858
[SPEAKER_01]: for a couple of thousand dollars, like Bob Wood has been in trouble before, you know, bankruptcies, defaulting on mortgages, I don't care how bad your life ever gets or how in the whole you ever become.

17:40.459 --> 17:47.505
[SPEAKER_01]: There is nothing to me that ever would for a second make considering what he did.

17:48.467 --> 17:49.729
[SPEAKER_01]: in any way justifiable.

17:50.049 --> 17:52.633
[SPEAKER_01]: I think he was a true monster.

17:52.954 --> 18:01.806
[SPEAKER_01]: And I think you see that not only with what he did to Christopher, but the way that he was so comfortable stealing from his job, the way that

18:02.619 --> 18:12.363
[SPEAKER_01]: you know, he was so comfortable committing insurance fraud, like it's all of these things built together that just showed that this person was was true evil.

18:13.224 --> 18:15.885
[SPEAKER_01]: And I had our hard times it going through.

18:16.625 --> 18:27.730
[SPEAKER_01]: Like I said, these cases, they get to me and they get under my skin and the fact that not only are you going to do something like this, but then he also gave

18:31.894 --> 18:58.276
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, Christopher's probably just scared to come home and, you know, if he comes home out, I'll hug him first and then I'll yell at him, you know, putting on this act and knowing full well what he had done and prepared for, you know, had the pictures of the house before had the picture of the house after the fire drove 50 miles to dump the body where nobody would hopefully find it and then just discarding his son's backpack on the side of the road

19:00.439 --> 19:17.432
[SPEAKER_01]: So there was so much about this that again, just really got to me and then to think about Christopher, this energetic, fun loving kid who's just building for it and jumping on the trampoline and you know, riding bikes in the neighborhood, this is 1999.

19:17.512 --> 19:20.234
[SPEAKER_01]: So it's not much past when I was a kid.

19:21.075 --> 19:22.656
[SPEAKER_01]: I went into high school in 2000.

19:22.696 --> 19:23.396
[SPEAKER_01]: So I remember

19:24.460 --> 19:30.565
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, riding bikes around the neighborhood and hanging out with your friends and playing in the woods and stuff like that, like this is just what you do.

19:30.625 --> 19:48.958
[SPEAKER_01]: And to think about myself at that age and how much I've lived since then, and all the experiences I've had, and to know that Christopher was robbed of that because his dad was in the whole financially, it's just heartbreaking, you know, he didn't get to live that life.

19:48.978 --> 19:53.621
[SPEAKER_01]: And then to think about Teresa, you know, Teresa now has to go through her life.

19:55.525 --> 20:02.496
[SPEAKER_01]: She walked out the door for school and her father, someone that she's supposed to trust, somebody who's supposed to be a protector, took her brother's life.

20:03.355 --> 20:07.257
[SPEAKER_01]: And, you know, have the situation got bad enough, what do you have taken hers to?

20:07.657 --> 20:11.319
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, how many life insurance policies that he have on his daughter?

20:12.019 --> 20:18.122
[SPEAKER_01]: So again, you know, going through case like this, it just really lets you know that true evil really does exist in the world.

20:18.683 --> 20:21.084
[SPEAKER_01]: And it can be taxing.

20:21.464 --> 20:27.147
[SPEAKER_01]: There's sometimes what I do this podcast when I'm like, why am I subjecting myself to this?

20:27.307 --> 20:28.327
[SPEAKER_01]: But what I will say is,

20:30.277 --> 20:41.926
[SPEAKER_01]: knowing that evil like this exists in the world, the only way to combat that is with giving as much love into the world as you can and being there for other people, the best that you can and showing up for others.

20:42.686 --> 20:49.931
[SPEAKER_01]: And so if you take away anything from that, there's like, if you're a member of this community, listen to this podcast, let's all go out and do that.

20:50.092 --> 20:52.113
[SPEAKER_01]: Let's put as much love into the world as we can.

20:52.433 --> 20:52.653
[SPEAKER_01]: So.

20:53.593 --> 21:02.983
[SPEAKER_01]: When we're talking about debble test, you know, for me, as far as, like, something like this ever happening to me, I'm going to put this into to, I love my child too much.

21:03.083 --> 21:06.527
[SPEAKER_01]: I would never ever, I mean, I love her more than anything in the world.

21:06.587 --> 21:09.570
[SPEAKER_01]: I would never ever be able to imagine hurting her.

21:09.990 --> 21:10.291
[SPEAKER_01]: But.

21:11.349 --> 21:25.095
[SPEAKER_01]: from just like an absolutely terrifying standpoint, I'm gonna put this at a 10 all day, because again, it just blows my mind that there are people out there walking the same street, it's breathing the same air as you and I, that would be capable of doing something like this.

21:25.176 --> 21:35.580
[SPEAKER_01]: So for me, scary-wise, I'm putting this as a 10, but as always, I wanna hear from you the listeners, the locksmiths, where does the murder of Christopher Wood fall on your devil test?

21:35.640 --> 21:36.321
