01:33.148 --> 01:37.450
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm also going to tell you this episode made me miss Michigan a little bit.
01:38.290 --> 01:42.932
[SPEAKER_01]: We have very specific types of diners and Michigan that are called Coney Islands.
01:42.952 --> 01:44.433
[SPEAKER_01]: We don't have them here in the south.
01:45.033 --> 01:55.481
[SPEAKER_01]: But as I was going through it, doing the research on this case, I was like, man, I can't wait to go home and get into a Coney Island because there is some food related stuff in this and they just kinda made me miss home.
01:55.521 --> 01:57.722
[SPEAKER_01]: It's also a very tragic story.
01:58.003 --> 02:02.966
[SPEAKER_01]: And there is a very interesting and unique way that this story plays out.
02:03.126 --> 02:06.069
[SPEAKER_01]: So again, super excited to break it down to share it with you.
02:06.289 --> 02:12.633

[SPEAKER_01]: With that being said, let's go ahead and quit the Gabby Gabby get into the Stabby Stabby.
02:42.383 --> 02:45.086
[SPEAKER_01]: Let's go ahead and break down this week's case.
02:45.146 --> 02:49.271
[SPEAKER_01]: 52-year-old Gerald Boggs had grown up in Steamboat Springs, Colorado.
02:49.591 --> 02:53.416
[SPEAKER_01]: He was a lifetime resident who loved the charm of the small town ski resort.
02:53.856 --> 02:57.759
[SPEAKER_01]: Gerald or Jerry to the people in Newham was well-known in the community.
02:58.059 --> 03:07.747
[SPEAKER_01]: He was friendly and liked by everyone who knew him, and his family business, Bog's hardware, had been a staple of Main Street, sitting in the same building for over 60 years.
03:08.307 --> 03:13.051
[SPEAKER_01]: But on October 22nd, 1993, Jerry didn't show up for work.
03:13.551 --> 03:22.258
[SPEAKER_01]: This was highly unlikely, causing his brother Doug, who worked with him at the hardware store to grow concerned, so Doug drove out to check on his brother.
03:23.018 --> 03:26.561
[SPEAKER_01]: Not knowing he was about to stumble upon a truly horrific scene.
03:27.261 --> 03:29.963
[SPEAKER_01]: There lying in the back doorway was Jerry's body.
03:30.423 --> 03:35.707
[SPEAKER_01]: He had been shot to death, and on the floor near the body was a bloody shovel and plastic bag.
03:36.148 --> 03:39.630
[SPEAKER_01]: Doug immediately called the police and they began to investigate the scene.
03:40.150 --> 03:42.992
[SPEAKER_01]: It appeared that Jerry had been ambushed as he entered his home.
03:43.673 --> 03:47.796
[SPEAKER_01]: Blood splatter on the ceiling indicated that he had been struck in the head as he walked in.
03:48.576 --> 03:51.539
[SPEAKER_01]: Being hit with a shovel repeatedly before being shot.
03:52.636 --> 03:55.739
[SPEAKER_01]: but it's what investigators didn't find that truly worried them.
03:56.700 --> 04:04.887
[SPEAKER_01]: You see it appeared that no valuable had been taken from the home, indicating that this attack was personal and not just a botched home invasion.
04:06.088 --> 04:10.292
[SPEAKER_01]: Additionally, there was absolutely no forensic evidence left behind.
04:11.113 --> 04:17.579
[SPEAKER_01]: No foot impressions, foreign haires, fingerprints, or anything that may have pointed to a possible suspect.
04:18.717 --> 04:23.218
[SPEAKER_01]: So investigators began speaking to neighbors, hoping that someone may have witnessed something.
04:24.379 --> 04:30.941
[SPEAKER_01]: Now, one resident reported seeing two seemingly suspicious men walking near Jerry's home on the day of his murder.
04:32.081 --> 04:34.902
[SPEAKER_01]: Detectives also learned about Jerry's ex-wife.
04:34.922 --> 04:36.322
[SPEAKER_01]: 48-year-old Jill Coit.
04:39.052 --> 04:50.861
[SPEAKER_01]: Jill had come to steamboat springs with her sons in 1991, with the goal of renovating some cottages in the area for a bed and breakfast, and hoping to rent them out to tourists who would come in for the ski season.
04:51.862 --> 04:55.865
[SPEAKER_01]: Bog's hardware was right around the corner, and Jill would come in for supplies.
04:56.926 --> 05:01.090
[SPEAKER_01]: The pair eventually met and seemed to hit it off, and they'd begin dating shortly after.
05:02.215 --> 05:09.160
[SPEAKER_01]: The couple would marry on April 4th, 1991 after Jill told Jerry that she was pregnant with his child.
05:10.481 --> 05:22.010
[SPEAKER_01]: Now, Jerry, about to be married and wanting to be a supportive partner, had also invested $100,000 into Jill's bed and breakfast renovation, but things would quickly grow turbulent.
05:23.191 --> 05:28.475
[SPEAKER_01]: Jerry's brother Doug would grow suspicious of his new sister-in-law, so we hired a private
05:31.093 --> 05:34.776
[SPEAKER_01]: And as Jerry would soon learn, she wasn't who he thought she was.
05:36.097 --> 05:37.619
[SPEAKER_01]: Jill had lied about her past.
05:38.039 --> 05:40.041
[SPEAKER_01]: She had been married before and worse.
05:40.541 --> 05:43.143
[SPEAKER_01]: She was still legally married to her previous husband.
05:44.184 --> 05:49.629
[SPEAKER_01]: With this new information and only seven days into their marriage, Jerry filed for an enrollment.
05:50.489 --> 05:56.835
[SPEAKER_01]: But the proceedings would go on for nearly seven months, with Jerry wanting his $100,000 investment return to him.
05:58.240 --> 06:02.542
[SPEAKER_01]: The pair were actually due in court only six days after Jerry was murdered.
06:04.143 --> 06:14.247
[SPEAKER_01]: Authorities quickly dialed in on Jill, but when questioned, she had an alibi, claiming that she had been camping in Pujre National Park nearly 150 miles away.
06:15.147 --> 06:20.630
[SPEAKER_01]: In fact, she had gone with her new boyfriend, Michael Baccus, who co-operated Jill's claim.
06:22.037 --> 06:25.418
[SPEAKER_01]: Jill and Jerry had a rocky pass, but her avabice seemed solid.
06:26.158 --> 06:29.278
[SPEAKER_01]: Leaving the authorities no closer to finding who killed Jerry.
06:29.798 --> 06:40.320
[SPEAKER_01]: Meanwhile an autopsy was conducted, and it was found that Gerald Boggs had been beaten in the head with a shovel, tortured with a stun gun, and shot three times in the chest with the 25 caliber pistol.
06:40.740 --> 06:48.802
[SPEAKER_01]: The shovel itself appeared to have bloody handprints on it, but whoever was striking Jerry wore gloves, so there was no identifying information left behind.
06:49.282 --> 06:58.307
[SPEAKER_01]: Detectives desperately needed to know when Jerry had been killed, so they looked into his activity on October 21st, the day before his body was found.
06:58.908 --> 07:03.150
[SPEAKER_01]: That morning, like every morning, Jerry opened the hardware store at 10 a.m.
07:03.850 --> 07:08.313
[SPEAKER_01]: He worked for a while before walking two doors down to a local restaurant called the shack.
07:08.793 --> 07:14.997
[SPEAKER_01]: Being a creature of habit, Jerry ordered his normal breakfast, eggs, toast, and hash browns.
07:16.101 --> 07:21.022
[SPEAKER_01]: With this information, investigators turned to scientists working at the University of Colorado.
07:21.662 --> 07:31.524
[SPEAKER_01]: And in a seemingly strange decision, they asked botanists working at the University to examine the contents of the victim's stomach, which contained undigested food.
07:32.044 --> 07:38.326
[SPEAKER_01]: When reviewed under a microscope, botanists were able to determine that that food and Jerry's stomach was in fact potatoes.
07:38.946 --> 07:43.547
[SPEAKER_01]: To detectives, this could have been an indicator that their victims' last meal was eaten
07:45.005 --> 07:45.965
[SPEAKER_01]: but there was a problem.
07:46.545 --> 07:49.046
[SPEAKER_01]: The botanists also found the presence of onions.
07:49.786 --> 07:55.968
[SPEAKER_01]: And according to the cook at the local restaurant, there were never onions in the eggs or in the hash browns that they served.
07:56.368 --> 07:58.189
[SPEAKER_01]: And this left investigators curious.
07:58.869 --> 08:05.511
[SPEAKER_01]: They didn't know if Jerry had been killed after breakfast or if he had eaten something with potatoes and onions later in the day.
08:06.511 --> 08:08.252
[SPEAKER_01]: So they continued to work the case.
08:09.072 --> 08:12.313
[SPEAKER_01]: And more information about Jill Coates' background was discovered.
08:13.395 --> 08:22.679
[SPEAKER_01]: Jerry had asked a friend to look into his soon-to-be ex-wife, and it was learned that Jill, who had been a former model and beauty queen, had been hiding quite a bit.
08:23.299 --> 08:24.680
[SPEAKER_01]: Jill had been married before.
08:25.420 --> 08:32.143
[SPEAKER_01]: Not once, not twice, but seven different times, making Jerry bogs her eighth husband.
08:33.163 --> 08:38.825
[SPEAKER_01]: She had also lied about her age, but worse, Jill had never actually been pregnant with Jerry's baby.
08:44.279 --> 08:54.082
[SPEAKER_01]: Investigators also learned that Jill had married in divorce another man since her enalment with Jerry, and she was currently engaged to her new boyfriend, Michael Bacchus.
08:55.263 --> 09:00.425
[SPEAKER_01]: But while looking into Jill's past marriages, something suspicious jumped out as detectives.
09:01.545 --> 09:06.187
[SPEAKER_01]: Jill's third husband, William Coet, had been murdered 20 years prior.
09:07.310 --> 09:17.515
[SPEAKER_01]: That case was still unsolved, but like Jerry Boggs, Hoyt had been killed with the same caliber pistol, and both had been preparing to take Jill to court within a week of their murders.
09:18.175 --> 09:25.999
[SPEAKER_01]: It was also found that Jill had claimed to be pregnant while in relationships with some of her other axes, using the ruse and hopes of financial gain.
09:27.209 --> 09:32.410
[SPEAKER_01]: So Armed with this new knowledge, detectives decided to take another look at Jill and her alibi.
09:33.231 --> 09:39.932
[SPEAKER_01]: She and Michael Baccus claimed to have arrived at the National Park on October 21st, the day the Jerry was murdered.
09:41.113 --> 09:48.655
[SPEAKER_01]: This would mean that if the food found in the victim's stomach was from dinner, Jill would have been 150 miles away at the time of the death.
09:49.613 --> 09:58.860
[SPEAKER_01]: But, if the food and Jerry stomach was from his meal at the shack, Jill could have murdered him in left town afterward, hoping to give herself a solid alibi.
10:13.967 --> 10:22.796
[SPEAKER_01]: detectives needed to know for sure, so they headed back to the shack, and this time standing in the kitchen and watching the cooks during the breakfast rush.
10:23.797 --> 10:29.743
[SPEAKER_01]: And, exactly as the cook said, he never added onions directly to the eggs or the hash browns.
10:30.264 --> 10:33.006
[SPEAKER_01]: But while watching the cook, detectives notice something.
10:34.103 --> 10:47.907
[SPEAKER_01]: Every time he would flip the food, pieces of diced onion from other orders would get incorporated, sticking to the spatula as several orders were cooked on the grill at once, eventually ending up in both the eggs and the hash browns.
10:48.707 --> 10:55.449
[SPEAKER_01]: And because of this, investigators now knew that the breakfast at the shack had in fact been Jerry Bog's last meal.
10:56.389 --> 11:03.671
[SPEAKER_01]: Meaning he was killed only a few hours after breakfast, and before Jill coit and Michael back as would have left for their camping trip.
11:04.191 --> 11:12.692
[SPEAKER_01]: Still, the evidence at this point was circumstantial of best, and to prove that Jill had something to do with the murder, investigators would need something concrete.
11:13.513 --> 11:19.374
[SPEAKER_01]: So a search warrant was issued for her car, and what police found was interesting to say the least.
11:20.565 --> 11:28.951
[SPEAKER_01]: Inside the vehicle, there were wigs, along with maps of Mexico, but most damning investigators found a stun gun.
11:29.792 --> 11:35.757
[SPEAKER_01]: And when tested, the pattern left by that stun gun matched the injuries on Jerry's body perfectly.
11:36.837 --> 11:42.502
[SPEAKER_01]: Detectives also went back to the neighbor who saw two men walking near Jerry's house on the day he was murdered.
11:43.302 --> 11:46.285
[SPEAKER_01]: With that witness recalling that one of the men looked odd.
11:47.248 --> 11:53.736
[SPEAKER_01]: They also provided an estimated height of the men, which matched the stature of both Jill Coates and Michael Bakis.
11:55.058 --> 12:04.570
[SPEAKER_01]: Investigators would also learn that Jill enjoyed wearing disguises, even discovering a picture of their suspect dresses a man and dawning a wig and fake beard.
12:05.932 --> 12:17.059
[SPEAKER_01]: Investigators now believe that Michael Baccus and Jill Coit disguises a man had entered Jerry's home, and once inside they waited, ambushing him as he entered the back door.
12:17.680 --> 12:28.467
[SPEAKER_01]: And this theory seemed even more plausible when it was learned that neither Jill Coit's or Michael Baccus had signed in or paid an emission fee at the National Park, where they claimed to be camping.
12:29.858 --> 12:36.922
[SPEAKER_01]: The pair would be arrested and charged with first-degree murder, and when the trial began, the jury would be stunned by a surprise witness.
12:37.582 --> 12:42.745
[SPEAKER_01]: Jill Coates adult son Seth, who would take the stand to testify against his own mother.
12:43.905 --> 12:51.890
[SPEAKER_01]: Seth told the court that directly after the murder his mother called him, telling her child that quote, it was over and it was messy.
12:52.510 --> 12:57.272
[SPEAKER_01]: The prosecution argued that Jerry had left work early arriving home shortly after one
12:58.683 --> 13:04.269
[SPEAKER_01]: When he entered the house, he was attacked from behind, first being tazed with a stun gun and beaten with a shovel.
13:05.350 --> 13:11.818
[SPEAKER_01]: They believed that Jill Quartz and Michael Baccus attempted to suffocate Jerry, using the plastic bag that was found at the scene.
13:12.458 --> 13:15.021
[SPEAKER_01]: But when that didn't work, the pair opened fire.
13:15.802 --> 13:18.145
[SPEAKER_01]: Shooting Jerry in the chest and ending his life.
13:19.406 --> 13:32.772
[SPEAKER_01]: It would take the jury only five hours to side with the prosecution, and in 1995, both Jill Coates and Michael Beckett would be found guilty, with each being sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
13:33.972 --> 13:39.815
[SPEAKER_01]: Now to this day, Jill remains the prime suspect in the murder of her ex-husband William Coates.
13:40.415 --> 13:42.816
[SPEAKER_01]: However, she has never been officially charged.
13:43.655 --> 13:47.376
[SPEAKER_01]: So that's this week's case and the clothes everything out will go ahead and share some final thoughts.
13:47.816 --> 13:53.378
[SPEAKER_01]: So again, as I mentioned at the top of this episode, and I don't know, maybe this is just specific to me in the way that my brain works.
13:53.958 --> 14:01.200
[SPEAKER_01]: But there was something about his breakfast at the shack that just reminded me of home so much.
14:01.620 --> 14:05.921
[SPEAKER_01]: We have Coney Islands in Michigan, and we would eat there all the time, just like diner food.
14:06.581 --> 14:11.703
[SPEAKER_01]: So when they're talking about Jerry getting his eggs and his toast in his hash browns,
14:12.723 --> 14:17.985
[SPEAKER_01]: it just kind of took me back and I understood why that would be like his go to spot to eat every day.
14:18.645 --> 14:23.086
[SPEAKER_01]: Because if I still live in Michigan, I would probably be eating an aconia island every day.
14:23.106 --> 14:27.928
[SPEAKER_01]: It's just a little diner you go in, you know, the Greek food and all the breakfast staples, everything like that.
14:28.608 --> 14:31.969
[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, throw a little bacon on there and I am sold.
14:32.029 --> 14:33.630
[SPEAKER_01]: That is the breakfast of champions.
14:33.750 --> 14:38.071
[SPEAKER_01]: So again, something about this case in a strange culinary
14:40.570 --> 14:48.590
[SPEAKER_01]: I do think that it is insane that Jill Coit had lived the life that she lived, I mean.
14:50.007 --> 14:51.168
[SPEAKER_01]: Marying is maintaining that.
14:51.188 --> 15:01.675
[SPEAKER_01]: People get married a lot and some people have a very high number of exes and maybe you find somebody and you settle down and you know just took you a lot of partners to get there.
15:01.715 --> 15:04.637
[SPEAKER_01]: That's no judgment on people who've been married several times.
15:04.697 --> 15:09.380
[SPEAKER_01]: But in this case it was clearly that she was running scams and grips.
15:09.500 --> 15:17.185
[SPEAKER_01]: I mean getting married to people before she was even divorced from her last spouse and then again being suspected of murdering one of those
15:19.110 --> 15:38.728
[SPEAKER_01]: I will say, I think this is the first case that we've ever done that has relied on looking at someone's food content in their stomach, which to me just seems like a crazy kind of innovative way to track down or get the evidence that you need and to think that this entire case kind
15:41.975 --> 15:58.064
[SPEAKER_01]: It just blew my mind a little bit as I was going through it, so I was really excited to talk about this one and break it down just because again, we don't get a lot of food related cases where it's like, yep, we looked and we could just figure out where these onions came from then we can either confirm or rule out a suspect.
15:58.564 --> 16:02.746
[SPEAKER_01]: So I thought that was very, very interesting, but this is still a very tragic case.
16:03.426 --> 16:05.808
[SPEAKER_01]: It's terrible that Jerry had to lose his life.
16:06.588 --> 16:30.447
[SPEAKER_01]: and it also makes you wonder about the kind of power or the ability to manipulate men that Jill Coit had because again her marriage was an old with Jerry and in the time between then and when he was killed she had already been remarried once divorced again and then had a new boyfriend and Michael back as who she was able to convince to assist her in a murder.
16:30.827 --> 16:31.007
[SPEAKER_01]: So
16:31.908 --> 16:42.632
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, there's a certain kind of person who takes to scamming and conning and grifting, and it sounds like Jill Coit was very, very well-off in that skill set.
16:43.453 --> 16:48.214
[SPEAKER_01]: I think the other thing that really shocked me as well is the fact that, you know, she had wig.
16:48.274 --> 16:50.015
[SPEAKER_01]: She had in a skate plan.
16:50.095 --> 16:52.256
[SPEAKER_01]: She liked dressing up.
16:52.316 --> 16:53.536
[SPEAKER_01]: She was in disguises.
16:53.576 --> 16:56.878
[SPEAKER_01]: And again, I don't know too many kind of straight laced.
16:57.738 --> 17:03.343
[SPEAKER_01]: rule following people that are like, hey, you know, in case we need it, I have disguises so that we don't get recognized.
17:03.383 --> 17:06.526
[SPEAKER_01]: So all in all, I thought this case was very, very interesting.
17:06.967 --> 17:10.030
[SPEAKER_01]: And I don't feel like we've run across a lot of cases like this before.
17:10.410 --> 17:13.453
[SPEAKER_01]: So I was really interested to share it and break the episode down.
17:13.813 --> 17:18.057
[SPEAKER_01]: But if we're talking about the Deadpool test, for me, I think I would probably put this about a five.
17:18.838 --> 17:20.580
[SPEAKER_01]: you know, I've been married to my wife.
17:20.980 --> 17:32.750
[SPEAKER_01]: I don't think I'm going to find any crazy history there where she's been married five, six, seven times before and I don't think that, you know, she's going to try to kill me for any large amount of money because, you know, I love my wife.
17:32.790 --> 17:33.891
[SPEAKER_01]: We just ain't rolling that way.
17:34.472 --> 17:45.161
[SPEAKER_01]: But I can understand how, if you are someone like Jerry, you've been a bachelor, you're entire life and you meet someone and you finally hit it off and you think you have that connection.
17:45.902 --> 17:49.157
[SPEAKER_01]: to find out that the person you think that you've fallen for.
17:50.248 --> 18:01.853
[SPEAKER_01]: is just not at all who they have appeared to be or presented themselves as could be absolutely devastating and then to suffer the ultimate betrayal and have that person take your life.
18:02.614 --> 18:05.235
[SPEAKER_01]: That aspect of this case is truly terrifying.
18:05.315 --> 18:09.217
[SPEAKER_01]: So again, for me, this is gonna be a six, but as always, I really wanna hear from you.
18:09.537 --> 18:15.360
