00:24.627 --> 00:28.751
[SPEAKER_01]: A quiet evening in a Portland, Oregon park, quickly turns horrific.
00:29.271 --> 00:38.459
[SPEAKER_01]: When a naked man attempts to assault parkgoers and kidnap a child, and a family vacation turns into a fight for their child's safety.

[SPEAKER_01]: Join me, John Conner, as I discuss a breaking case.
00:43.043 --> 00:45.085
[SPEAKER_01]: This is Check The Lockspotcast.
00:57.541 --> 01:08.730
[SPEAKER_01]: Hello, and thank you for joining me as I dive into yet another truly terrifying, short on time case, before we get started, as always I hope you're doing well, hope it's been a great week for you, family doing well.
01:08.750 --> 01:09.791
[SPEAKER_01]: You guys are staying cool.
01:10.531 --> 01:16.796
[SPEAKER_01]: I literally just got home from a nine hour drive coming back from Michigan, and
01:17.597 --> 01:23.340
[SPEAKER_01]: and burn them through the midnight oil to put this short on time together to make sure everything goes out.
01:23.440 --> 01:30.424
[SPEAKER_01]: So I'm a little tired, but thank you for hanging in there with me and thank you for hanging out with me while you're doing whatever it is you got going on.
01:30.804 --> 01:35.466
[SPEAKER_01]: If you're running errands and doing whatever, thank you so much for letting me hang out with you while you do that.
01:36.307 --> 01:45.852
[SPEAKER_01]: Had a great time in Michigan, see in the family going up for my sister's birthday, but I will say we drove up on late Thursday afternoon.
01:47.088 --> 01:55.491
[SPEAKER_01]: And as soon as we got about halfway through Ohio, it just got real hazy and it was the smoke from all those Canadian wildfires.
01:56.251 --> 02:05.054
[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, you couldn't see more than like a mile and a half in front of you starting in the middle of Ohio and then as we got closer to Michigan, it just kind of got thicker and thicker.
02:05.074 --> 02:06.815
[SPEAKER_01]: I've never seen anything like that.
02:06.915 --> 02:14.698
[SPEAKER_01]: So I know we have listeners who listen to this podcast in Canada, we have listeners who listen, you know, further up north.
02:15.498 --> 02:37.438
[SPEAKER_01]: If you're listening to this and you were in the path of either of those fires or the air quality alerts anything like that, I hope that you are safe and feeling okay because it was just one of the craziest things I've ever seen so again, it was just wild and and if you're anywhere near that, I hope that you're doing alright and stay in healthy and and doing everything you need you to stay safe.
02:38.078 --> 02:48.722
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm going to be very honest with everybody, I'm very tired, so we're just going to go ahead and quit the Gabby Gabby, get into the stabby stabby, and let's talk about today's short on-time case.
02:49.282 --> 02:58.365
[SPEAKER_01]: On July 11th of this year, 911 dispatchers in Portland, Oregon received a disturbing phone call at about 651 pm.
02:58.925 --> 03:01.366
[SPEAKER_01]: According to the caller, a man was running nude near
03:06.371 --> 03:12.973
[SPEAKER_01]: This caller stated that the same naked man had attempted to punch them, but the worst was yet to come.
03:14.053 --> 03:24.156
[SPEAKER_01]: A third call would come into dispatcher shortly after, and according to this caller, the same man had attempted to wrestle a seven-year-old girl away from her mother.
03:25.016 --> 03:30.638
[SPEAKER_01]: According to witnesses, the mother was fighting back, pushing the man away and hitting him when she could.
03:35.324 --> 03:41.046
[SPEAKER_01]: Officers arrived on the scene where they located the man waiting naked in a river adjacent to the park.
03:41.907 --> 03:47.329
[SPEAKER_01]: He was taken into custody and was later identified as 31-year-old Daniel C. Vacy.
03:48.349 --> 03:56.453
[SPEAKER_01]: Officers also spoke to the mother and investigators learned that the woman and her daughter were in town from out of state, there to visit family.
03:57.347 --> 04:00.448
[SPEAKER_01]: Vacy had approached them and tried to grab the seven-year-old.
04:01.088 --> 04:13.431
[SPEAKER_01]: The woman told police that Vacy had grabbed her daughter's arm while shouting, I am God, leading to a struggle between the mother and the naked attacker, causing the child to be physically lifted from the ground.
04:14.112 --> 04:20.834
[SPEAKER_01]: Luckily, bystanders and the girl's father acted quickly, with several people slapping and punching Vacy.
04:26.215 --> 04:32.179
[SPEAKER_01]: Upon his arrest, Vacy told police that he was having some type of manic episode in that he hadn't slept in days.
04:32.779 --> 04:44.127
[SPEAKER_01]: It would later be learned that the Asayla had been seen by medical staff and a social worker earlier in the day after checking himself in to legacy Mount Hood Hospital complaining of sleep deprivation.
04:44.807 --> 04:51.772
[SPEAKER_01]: But during the checkout process, Vacy exited the building before approaching a vehicle located near the emergency room.
04:52.717 --> 04:57.801
[SPEAKER_01]: But there he began striking the cars windows with his fists, nearly punching them out.
04:58.861 --> 05:03.845
[SPEAKER_01]: Security officers asked Vacy to leave the property, but instead of complying, he charged them.
05:04.626 --> 05:11.030
[SPEAKER_01]: He would be arrested and booked at around 2 in the afternoon, before being released at about 5-23 p.m.
05:11.791 --> 05:16.514
[SPEAKER_01]: The first 9-1-1 call from the park, if you remember, would come in at about 651, so only
05:21.233 --> 05:31.527
[SPEAKER_01]: Vacy was arrested in charge with attempted first and second degree kidnapping, first degree custodial interference, third degree assault, and harassment.
05:32.512 --> 05:36.713
[SPEAKER_01]: So we will definitely keep an eye on the story because I have to know more.
05:37.233 --> 05:41.394
[SPEAKER_01]: But let's go ahead, wrap up this short on time and talk about some final thoughts.
05:41.914 --> 05:55.237
[SPEAKER_01]: So first and foremost, thank God that Vacy did not meet my wife in that park because there would be one dead naked man laying in the middle of that playground because my wife does not play.
05:56.057 --> 05:57.518
[SPEAKER_01]: She would be ready to throw hands.
05:58.558 --> 06:07.523
[SPEAKER_01]: I could see her kind of going, you know, Wolverine, berserker, going, you know, full feral animal and just clawing faces and taking out eyes.
06:07.943 --> 06:13.266
[SPEAKER_01]: And I am sure that that is exactly what this mother did to the best of her ability as well.
06:13.766 --> 06:21.310
[SPEAKER_01]: I am very thankful that there were other people around to, you know, help restrain Vazir, at least get them to run off because
06:22.250 --> 06:28.231
[SPEAKER_01]: as a parent that it's got to be the most absolutely terrifying thing that you can see when you're out with your kid, right?
06:28.751 --> 06:49.595
[SPEAKER_01]: Not only do you have a naked person running at you and you're probably in that moment trying to wrap your brain around like what you're seeing and like protecting your child from seeing that, but then this person comes up grabs your child and is trying to wrestle them away from you and I'm sure you know again in that moment that fighter flight just
06:50.235 --> 06:55.780
[SPEAKER_01]: kind of kicks in and you're doing everything you can because you're adrenaline's pumping and everything in that nature.
06:55.901 --> 07:09.333
[SPEAKER_01]: So on Forteil was able to see like a good picture, I don't know if he was like a very big guy or he thought that, but again, just no one how my wife is and I've got two sisters and my mom, I know that.
07:10.100 --> 07:15.006
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, when a mother thinks that their child is in danger, they're gonna do everything they can to protect them.
07:15.066 --> 07:18.170
[SPEAKER_01]: I think it's just that natural instinct that a lot of mothers have.
07:18.190 --> 07:23.276
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, that's all stories about lifting a car off of their children and things of that nature.
07:24.518 --> 07:25.959
[SPEAKER_01]: So, you know, again, I can...
07:26.720 --> 07:40.106
[SPEAKER_01]: only imagine the fear that must have been going through this woman's mind at that time and as I mentioned, just thank God there were so many people there who came together as a community and were like, we're gonna get this guy out of here.
07:40.866 --> 07:43.647
[SPEAKER_01]: Also sounds like a terrible thing to happen on vacation.
07:43.667 --> 07:48.229
[SPEAKER_01]: And I, you know, like I said, I drove home from Michigan today and started getting into
07:50.630 --> 07:52.991
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, found this case, so then I knew I was doing a short on time.
07:53.011 --> 08:06.219
[SPEAKER_01]: And I was like, man, you know, if I was away visiting my family and just there to have a good time and kind of leisure out with the kids and everything like that, and then this is what I encountered, it would be infuriating.
08:06.239 --> 08:07.179
[SPEAKER_01]: It would be upsetting.
08:07.460 --> 08:14.363
[SPEAKER_01]: You're now having to worry about emotional scarring on your child and for a couple of different reasons, that case.
08:14.403 --> 08:16.525
[SPEAKER_01]: So again, this one was just,
08:17.668 --> 08:18.589
[SPEAKER_01]: it was just rough.
08:19.010 --> 08:33.705
[SPEAKER_01]: And then, to think about the fact that Vacy had been in a hospital for a manic issue earlier in the day, only, you know, a little more than an hour before he decided to take all his clothes off and go run to this park.
08:34.326 --> 08:38.089
[SPEAKER_01]: And I mean, there's obviously some kind of mental health thing happening.
08:38.770 --> 08:44.712
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, I don't know about you, but I'm not getting naked and run through a park unless I'm having some kind of mental health crisis.
08:45.472 --> 08:46.952
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm just, I'm not bill for that.
08:47.292 --> 08:53.814
[SPEAKER_01]: So, you know, there's obviously a lack of resources or he's not getting the help that he needs.
08:53.874 --> 08:57.875
[SPEAKER_01]: So, you know, it's going to be very interesting to see how this case plays out.
08:58.575 --> 09:00.456
[SPEAKER_01]: I definitely want to keep an eye on it as I said.
09:01.616 --> 09:11.849
[SPEAKER_01]: make sure that we're following up with any updates and anything like that because again, this kind of thing would be so scary that I want to know how everything wraps up with it.
09:11.969 --> 09:12.109
[SPEAKER_01]: So
09:13.223 --> 09:23.892
[SPEAKER_01]: That kind of leads me in the debt bull test again for me if I was walking through the park with my daughter and a naked man came running up to me and tried to grab her that would be terrifying.
09:23.932 --> 09:28.176
[SPEAKER_01]: So as a parent and I know we have a lot of parents in the Facebook group.
09:28.196 --> 09:29.918
[SPEAKER_01]: We have a lot of parents who listen to the podcast.

09:36.223 --> 09:43.387
