[SPEAKER_00]: Check the locks podcast is not appropriate for all listeners.

00:12.401 --> 00:14.445
[SPEAKER_00]: Listener discretion is strongly advised.

00:24.922 --> 00:32.376
[SPEAKER_01]: a 14-year-old girl accepts a job as a babysitter in a neighboring town, only to never be seen or heard from again.

00:32.416 --> 00:37.104
[SPEAKER_01]: In nearly 50 years later, her family is still searching for answers.

00:37.745 --> 00:42.534
[SPEAKER_01]: Join me, John Connor, as I discuss the disappearance of Margaret Allen Fox.

00:43.175 --> 00:45.259
[SPEAKER_01]: This is Check The Locks Podcast.

00:57.575 --> 01:02.081
[SPEAKER_01]: Hello, and thank you for joining me as I dive into yet another truly terrifying true crime case.

01:02.162 --> 01:06.007
[SPEAKER_01]: Before we get started, as always, I hope it has been a wonderful week for you.

01:06.027 --> 01:07.069
[SPEAKER_01]: I hope you were doing well.

01:07.109 --> 01:11.255
[SPEAKER_01]: Your loved ones are doing well, and as always, I just wanted to say thank you for letting me hang out with you.

01:11.595 --> 01:19.847
[SPEAKER_01]: If you're at the gym driving in the car, going to work, whatever you're doing, thank you so much for letting me and check the locks be a part of your daily routine and for listening to the episode.

01:20.408 --> 01:26.957
[SPEAKER_01]: Before we get started, I did want to cover just a couple of big updates that have happened in the true crime world.

01:26.937 --> 01:34.685
[SPEAKER_01]: Gilgo Beach, serial killer, Rex Huerman has pled guilty, so huge, huge break in that.

01:34.785 --> 01:41.492
[SPEAKER_01]: I know after his arrest, he originally had pled not guilty, but there was so much damning DNA evidence.

01:42.093 --> 01:47.218
[SPEAKER_01]: One of the victims had not only his hair, but hair from his wife and his daughter.

01:47.238 --> 01:55.847
[SPEAKER_01]: Now that it's not saying that his wife and daughter had anything to do with it, but

01:55.945 --> 01:57.147
[SPEAKER_01]: to that victim.

01:57.768 --> 02:05.823
[SPEAKER_01]: Also, all of the murders seem to line up with when human's wife and children were out of town for extended periods of time.

02:06.464 --> 02:14.599
[SPEAKER_01]: So, you know, with evidence like that, I am hard pressed to believe that, you know, he thought he had any kind of chance to be in any case.

02:15.300 --> 02:18.105
[SPEAKER_01]: And just ended up doing the right thing and saying, yes.

02:18.895 --> 02:25.488
[SPEAKER_01]: I am guilty and also named another victim that we did not know about her or had tied to him.

02:25.549 --> 02:32.262
[SPEAKER_01]: So crazy update there and then Tanner Horner has also pled guilty as well.

02:32.803 --> 02:39.537
[SPEAKER_01]: If you've listened to this podcast for a while, you may remember the case of seven-year-old Athena Strand.

02:39.803 --> 02:42.667
[SPEAKER_01]: That case broke me to my core.

02:43.208 --> 02:44.671
[SPEAKER_01]: This was a seven year old girl.

02:44.731 --> 02:46.994
[SPEAKER_01]: Tanner Horner was a FedEx driver.

02:47.054 --> 02:51.281
[SPEAKER_01]: He backed into her, didn't kill her, but was afraid of losing his job.

02:51.942 --> 02:57.070
[SPEAKER_01]: So he abducted her, murdered her, and then left her, just dispose of her body.

02:57.050 --> 03:00.795
[SPEAKER_01]: And I remember being in tears going through that case.

03:01.496 --> 03:03.038
[SPEAKER_01]: So he has pled guilty.

03:03.259 --> 03:05.682
[SPEAKER_01]: We are currently in the middle of the sentencing trial.

03:06.143 --> 03:08.526
[SPEAKER_01]: We're waiting to find out if he's going to get life in prison.

03:09.006 --> 03:11.410
[SPEAKER_01]: If he's going to get the death penalty, still don't know.

03:11.971 --> 03:13.893
[SPEAKER_01]: But we do know that he has pled guilty.

03:13.933 --> 03:20.843
[SPEAKER_01]: And either way, you know, is going to get a very severe sentence for that.

03:21.584 --> 03:26.871
[SPEAKER_01]: And I will say,

03:27.442 --> 03:33.229
[SPEAKER_01]: I am so glad that he did just plead guilty and spared the family of the trial.

03:33.249 --> 03:40.939
[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, just to go through that and then have to relive things through a trial, I think would be absolutely devastating.

03:41.039 --> 03:47.627
[SPEAKER_01]: So very happy that he just went ahead and blood guilty and now we just got to see what the future holds.

03:47.607 --> 03:49.370
[SPEAKER_01]: We will come back, maybe loop those.

03:49.410 --> 03:52.155
[SPEAKER_01]: I know the Gilgo case we never really didn't episode on.

03:52.736 --> 03:54.679
[SPEAKER_01]: That's just because it was such a huge case.

03:54.739 --> 04:04.857
[SPEAKER_01]: And then the national spotlight, we do try to focus on some of the smaller lesser known cases, but that was one, you know, if you're in the true crime world at all.

04:04.837 --> 04:07.701
[SPEAKER_01]: you just, you knew what was going on there.

04:07.821 --> 04:12.108
[SPEAKER_01]: So again, we may come back to do some more updates as they pop up there.

04:12.128 --> 04:16.194
[SPEAKER_01]: But this week, you know, I started the month with a missing person's case.

04:17.015 --> 04:22.923
[SPEAKER_01]: And then as I've kind of gone through the month, I was just like, you know, I kind of want to do more of these at least for this month.

04:23.444 --> 04:25.427
[SPEAKER_01]: And I think the reason for that being is,

04:25.407 --> 04:33.280
[SPEAKER_01]: We've done cases where they have taken decades and decades, but they finally do get solved that these families, these victims, they do get some kind of closure.

04:33.921 --> 04:35.644
[SPEAKER_01]: So this month, I'm just going to stick with it.

04:35.885 --> 04:40.813
[SPEAKER_01]: We're going to call this month the missing month, and we are going to be doing another missing person's case this week.

04:40.873 --> 04:44.059
[SPEAKER_01]: Now again, I know, you know, if you've listened for years, this little bit different.

04:44.079 --> 04:50.149
[SPEAKER_01]: We usually do stories with a very clear middle beginning and some kind of resolution, but

04:50.129 --> 04:55.315
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, I've found myself being drawn to these cases and again, I think it's good to get those stories out.

04:55.435 --> 04:59.619
[SPEAKER_01]: So very interested to see if this is a case that you are familiar with.

04:59.699 --> 05:06.827
[SPEAKER_01]: If you're a listener, a locksmith, did you know about this case before, if not what are your thoughts, things of that nature.

05:06.867 --> 05:08.689
[SPEAKER_01]: So super excited to get into it.

05:09.070 --> 05:13.154
[SPEAKER_01]: And again, just want to say thank you so much for hanging out with me and letting me cover this case for you.

05:13.174 --> 05:15.357
[SPEAKER_01]: So with that, we'll quit the Gabby Gabby.

05:15.377 --> 05:16.558
[SPEAKER_01]: We'll get to the stabby stabby.

05:16.578 --> 05:19.461
[SPEAKER_01]: Let's break into this week's case.

05:19.441 --> 05:22.966
[SPEAKER_01]: Margaret Ellen Fox was 14 years old in 1974.

05:24.167 --> 05:30.756
[SPEAKER_01]: She was born in Burlington, New Jersey on February 4th, 1960 to her parents, David, and Mary Fox.

05:31.957 --> 05:37.244
[SPEAKER_01]: Margaret was small but she was a bit of a tomboy with dark brown hair, blue eyes and freckles.

05:38.466 --> 05:43.052
[SPEAKER_01]: She grew up rough housing with her four brothers, but Margaret was also bright and determined.

05:43.853 --> 05:47.558
[SPEAKER_01]: A kind girl who loves swimming in the summer and ice

05:48.888 --> 05:52.212
[SPEAKER_01]: In 1974, Margaret was beginning to become a young woman.

05:53.012 --> 05:59.399
[SPEAKER_01]: In June, she had graduated from St. Paul's Grammar school, but, like most teenagers, she was looking to find a dependent.

06:00.300 --> 06:02.242
[SPEAKER_01]: Specifically, a way to make her own money.

06:03.103 --> 06:05.446
[SPEAKER_01]: Leading her to become interested in babysitting.

06:06.327 --> 06:11.993
[SPEAKER_01]: Hoping that it would be a way for her to earn a paycheck that she could use for her own clothing and activities.

06:13.542 --> 06:19.550
[SPEAKER_01]: Margaret's parents weren't very supportive of the idea, but like most kids, their daughter persisted.

06:19.570 --> 06:26.159
[SPEAKER_01]: And after several discussions, David and Mary allowed Margaret to run an ad in the local newspaper.

06:27.240 --> 06:30.605
[SPEAKER_01]: Partnering with her younger cousin, Taufer Baby Sitting Services.

06:31.847 --> 06:35.972
[SPEAKER_01]: And on June 19th, 1974, she received a call.

06:36.813 --> 06:41.438
[SPEAKER_01]: A man who called himself John Marshall needed a babysitter for his five-year-old son.

06:42.339 --> 06:46.023
[SPEAKER_01]: He had originally reached out to the girl's cousin, but she wasn't able to do it.

06:46.644 --> 07:06.465
[SPEAKER_01]: So the man offered Margaret $40 a week plus bus fare to watch his child from 9.30 a.m. to 130 p.m. Now to put that into perspective, $40 in 1974 is the equivalent of $265.26, which would

07:07.424 --> 07:13.931
[SPEAKER_01]: The job was in the neighboring town of Mount Holly, where John Marshall would pick up Margaret in his red Volkswagen.

07:14.992 --> 07:20.378
[SPEAKER_01]: Then either Marshall or his wife would drop the girl off between two and two-thirty every afternoon.

07:21.699 --> 07:26.485
[SPEAKER_01]: Now of course Margaret agreed and she was supposed to start working on June 21st.

07:27.546 --> 07:30.529
[SPEAKER_01]: But the day before, Marshall called again.

07:31.066 --> 07:33.709
[SPEAKER_01]: This time, Margaret's father David answered the phone.

07:34.490 --> 07:37.513
[SPEAKER_01]: Trying to get a read on the man who had hired his teenage daughter.

07:38.494 --> 07:43.600
[SPEAKER_01]: Marshall explained that there had been a death in the family and he asked if Margaret could start the following Monday.

07:43.640 --> 07:47.144
[SPEAKER_01]: David and his wife Mary agreed but with one rule.

07:48.045 --> 07:51.189
[SPEAKER_01]: Margaret was to call home when she arrived at Marshall's for work.

07:51.970 --> 07:54.032
[SPEAKER_01]: To which Marshall said wouldn't be a problem.

07:55.354 --> 07:59.959
[SPEAKER_01]: He also encouraged Margaret to bring her swimsuit saying that she could swim in the family's pool.

08:00.985 --> 08:11.619
[SPEAKER_01]: So on the morning of June 24th, 1974, Margaret woke up and got ready to start her new job, grabbing her swimsuit and huckleberry-hound eyeglasses case.

08:12.721 --> 08:23.415
[SPEAKER_01]: Margaret's younger brother Joe walked his sister to the bus stop, where he watched her board the bus to make the seven-mile trip from Burlington to Mount Holly at 840 AM.

08:25.066 --> 08:32.496
[SPEAKER_01]: Now as the morning progressed, David and Mary waited for their daughter to call, as she was supposed to check in when she arrived at the Marshall home.

08:33.617 --> 08:40.025
[SPEAKER_01]: But the phone never rang, and at first they tried not to worry, thinking that maybe Margaret's bus had just been delayed.

08:41.187 --> 08:44.391
[SPEAKER_01]: But more time passed than there was still no word from their daughter.

08:45.432 --> 08:49.858
[SPEAKER_01]: So the nervous parents called the house phone number that John Marshall had provided.

08:50.547 --> 09:04.349
[SPEAKER_01]: Initially, the phone just rang and rang, and eventually someone answered, informing David and Mary that they were connected to a pay-phone outside of a grocery store in Lumberton, New Jersey, two miles south of Mount Holly.

09:05.852 --> 09:16.048
[SPEAKER_01]: Margaret's parents were now even more concerned, but they knew that their daughter was supposed to be dropped off between 2 and 2.30, so they anxiously waited for Margaret's return.

09:16.788 --> 09:20.613
[SPEAKER_01]: However, full-blown panic set in when the teenager never arrived.

09:21.615 --> 09:31.128
[SPEAKER_01]: So David Fox called a friend, who was also an East Hampton New Jersey police officer, and the two drove to Mount Holly searching for the missing 14-year-old.

09:32.170 --> 09:37.858
[SPEAKER_01]: Neighbors also organized the search hoping to locate Margaret quickly, but there was no sign of the girl.

09:38.579 --> 09:45.208
[SPEAKER_01]: Now, at this time, a person had to be missing for a certain amount of time before you could

09:45.560 --> 09:51.747
[SPEAKER_01]: So on June 25th, just after midnight and as soon as he could, David went to the police.

09:52.809 --> 09:59.196
[SPEAKER_01]: And unlike a lot of other cases that we've covered on this podcast, the police did not initially think that Margaret had run away.

10:00.218 --> 10:04.863
[SPEAKER_01]: She was close to her family and they could find no reason for the girl to run off on her own.

10:05.884 --> 10:14.875
[SPEAKER_01]: So they got to work immediately, boarding the bus that Margaret would have taken for the 20-minute ride, hoping to retrace her steps that day.

10:15.209 --> 10:18.015
[SPEAKER_01]: and looking for any clues as to what may have happened.

10:19.458 --> 10:26.434
[SPEAKER_01]: Now, two separate women remembered Margaret, telling detectives that she exited the bus at the expected Mount Holly Stop.

10:27.359 --> 10:37.674
[SPEAKER_01]: One of the women sat behind the girl, and she recalled her young son pulling on Margaret's hair, telling investigators that Margaret turned around smiling and chatting with a woman.

10:38.636 --> 10:45.606
[SPEAKER_01]: Another witness from the bus shared that they saw Margaret talking to a man in his 20s, saying he was parked in a red sports car.

10:46.667 --> 10:55.240
[SPEAKER_01]: Detectives were eventually able to track that man down and he would be cleared, and they

10:56.485 --> 11:02.732
[SPEAKER_01]: Authorities canvass the area, showing people on the street pictures of the missing girl, but no one had seen Margaret.

11:03.754 --> 11:11.643
[SPEAKER_01]: With few leads and little clues, the FBI would be called in only four days later, with the case being classified as an abduction.

11:13.305 --> 11:20.113
[SPEAKER_01]: Now Agent set up wire taps inside the fox home, hoping that whoever had taken Margaret may call the family.

11:20.701 --> 11:22.646
[SPEAKER_01]: and before long, the phone rang.

11:23.147 --> 11:25.573
[SPEAKER_01]: With the man on the other end demanding a ransom.

11:25.593 --> 11:30.686
[SPEAKER_01]: $10,000 might be a lot of bread, but your daughter's life is the butter topic.

11:31.107 --> 11:31.909
[SPEAKER_01]: Who is it?

11:31.990 --> 11:42.069
[SPEAKER_01]: Again, to put the demanded perspective, $10,000 in 1974 is the equivalent of $66,980 today.

11:42.550 --> 11:55.534
[SPEAKER_01]: Now it's important to remember that by this time, Margaret's disappearance had made the national news, and the FBI believed that the person calling could simply be trying to cash in on a crime they had nothing to do with.

11:56.358 --> 12:00.990
[SPEAKER_01]: but David and Mary didn't hesitate, going to the bank and withdrawing the ransom amount.

12:01.933 --> 12:04.961
[SPEAKER_01]: However, a second call with instructions never came.

12:05.903 --> 12:11.498
[SPEAKER_01]: In two days later, the family received a letter at home, telling them that the deal was off.

12:26.142 --> 12:31.648
[SPEAKER_01]: Upon further investigation, the letters seemed to have been penned by the Symbolese Liberation Army.

12:32.429 --> 12:36.914
[SPEAKER_01]: The same terrorist organization that had kidnapped Patty Hearst just a few months prior.

12:38.356 --> 12:45.184
[SPEAKER_01]: Sadly, agents were never able to determine if the ransom demands were legitimate or just some kind of cruel hoax.

12:46.845 --> 12:54.394
[SPEAKER_01]: The FBI and local police continued the investigation.

12:54.897 --> 12:58.723
[SPEAKER_01]: They also located every John Marshall who resided nearby.

12:58.783 --> 13:01.988
[SPEAKER_01]: Some of whom actually became people of interest.

13:03.170 --> 13:07.697
[SPEAKER_01]: Including the man who managed the grocery store with a pay phone calls came from.

13:08.558 --> 13:09.840
[SPEAKER_01]: But police were skeptical.

13:10.922 --> 13:13.185
[SPEAKER_01]: Why would the kidnapper provide his real name?

13:14.307 --> 13:17.271
[SPEAKER_01]: Also, John Marshall, the manager, had nullified.

13:18.012 --> 13:22.980
[SPEAKER_01]: He had been working on the day of Margaret's disappearance

13:23.888 --> 13:26.591
[SPEAKER_01]: He would eventually be given a polygraph test in past.

13:27.432 --> 13:34.540
[SPEAKER_01]: Meanwhile, the prosecutor's office manned a hotline for tips, leading to sightings of Margaret in Bolshicago and Texas.

13:35.641 --> 13:41.427
[SPEAKER_01]: Investigators worked every lead, but they still came up empty, clearing up to 12 people of interest.

13:42.408 --> 13:46.253
[SPEAKER_01]: And by August 8, 1974, the leads had run dry.

13:47.574 --> 13:49.356
[SPEAKER_01]: Margaret's case would grow cold.

13:50.365 --> 13:55.210
[SPEAKER_01]: But then, in 1976, a man named Charles Clobridge came forward.

13:56.231 --> 14:01.196
[SPEAKER_01]: He claimed to have ducted and murdered Margaret before disposing of her body in the Catskills Mountains.

14:02.237 --> 14:07.041
[SPEAKER_01]: But investigators would later learn that he had actually been hospitalized on the day of her disappearance.

14:07.962 --> 14:19.714
[SPEAKER_01]: His story would be determined to be fabricated and he'd be charged with filing a false police report.

14:19.829 --> 14:26.718
[SPEAKER_01]: A human skull was found on the hills of the Atlantic Highlands, and cadaver dogs were used to locate additional remains.

14:28.079 --> 14:33.046
[SPEAKER_01]: Sadly, dental records would rule out the possibility of the victim being Margaret Fox.

14:34.347 --> 14:36.230
[SPEAKER_01]: But investigators still never gave up.

14:36.931 --> 14:40.715
[SPEAKER_01]: Throughout the years, as new technology emerged, the case would be revisited.

14:41.516 --> 14:46.883
[SPEAKER_01]: DNA testing would be done and run in national databases, but still nothing.

14:46.981 --> 14:53.889
[SPEAKER_01]: Margaret's father, David, would pass away in 1993, with her mother Mary passing only 10 years later in 2003.

14:55.371 --> 15:01.879
[SPEAKER_01]: Both leaving this world without ever getting the answers they so desperately needed, never knowing what happened to their daughter.

15:02.720 --> 15:09.248
[SPEAKER_01]: In 2017, a retired police detective named Michael Dallissia, volunteered to work on Margaret's case.

15:10.149 --> 15:16.296
[SPEAKER_01]: Working in partnership with the Burlington Police and hoping to find new leads that would

15:17.390 --> 15:26.026
[SPEAKER_01]: Then, in 2019, investigators would release the audio recording of the ransom call, hoping that someone may recognize the caller's voice.

15:26.908 --> 15:32.158
[SPEAKER_01]: As well as creating an agent-hands photo of what Margaret may have looked like in 2019.

15:33.792 --> 15:41.521
[SPEAKER_01]: Now, as of today, it has been nearly 50 years since Margaret Ellen Fox climbed onto that bus, only didn't ever be seen again.

15:41.561 --> 15:56.239
[SPEAKER_01]: But Margaret surviving family and friends still love her and miss her very much, thinking about her all of the time, and a $25,000 reward remains for anyone with information that leads to the arrest of her doctor.

15:57.215 --> 15:59.918
[SPEAKER_01]: Today, Margaret would be 65 years old.

16:00.819 --> 16:11.753
[SPEAKER_01]: And if you have any information that can help find Margaret Ellen Fox, please contact your local FBI office or call the Burlington City Police Department at 609-386-3300.

16:15.137 --> 16:22.986
[SPEAKER_01]: Again, that's the Burlington City Police Department at 609-386-3300.

16:22.966 --> 16:24.428
[SPEAKER_01]: So that's this week's case.

16:25.049 --> 16:28.113
[SPEAKER_01]: And as always, I wanted to share some final thoughts like a normally do.

16:28.314 --> 16:33.260
[SPEAKER_01]: So right off the bat again, as a parent, I can tell you that this case broke my heart.

16:34.342 --> 16:44.997
[SPEAKER_01]: I cannot imagine not only losing a child, but then to lose my life without ever knowing what happened with having so many unanswered questions.

16:45.317 --> 16:50.745
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, it's just something I think that

16:51.417 --> 16:53.140
[SPEAKER_01]: can't even put into words.

16:54.242 --> 17:01.576
[SPEAKER_01]: And one thing I know about David Fox just from doing the research, he never gave up his car when he drove around.

17:01.596 --> 17:04.261
[SPEAKER_01]: It had pictures of Margaret on the car.

17:04.601 --> 17:06.665
[SPEAKER_01]: He had flyers in the car at all times.

17:07.206 --> 17:10.472
[SPEAKER_01]: He was always out there every day of his life.

17:11.026 --> 17:20.465
[SPEAKER_01]: looking to find out what happened to his daughter, you know, and I just can't imagine what it's like to spend every day with your heart hurting in that way.

17:20.906 --> 17:32.089
[SPEAKER_01]: So my heart goes out to her family and her siblings who buy everything I could find in the research or still live and are still working to find answers as to what happened to Margaret.

17:32.440 --> 17:37.309
[SPEAKER_01]: The other thing that is crazy to me about the story, and I know that I've talked about it before, is that this is in 1974.

17:37.349 --> 17:40.776
[SPEAKER_01]: So this is before the true crime boom.

17:40.796 --> 17:48.711
[SPEAKER_01]: I believe this is before we're even keeping national statistics on violent crimes, serial killers, things of that nature.

17:49.493 --> 17:52.318
[SPEAKER_01]: And it's just so striking to me.

17:52.358 --> 17:54.482
[SPEAKER_01]: I was talking about it with my wife, but.

17:54.462 --> 18:03.055
[SPEAKER_01]: It was just such a different time where you would let your 14 year old just get on the bus and be like, yep, you can head over to a different city.

18:03.095 --> 18:08.143
[SPEAKER_01]: And again, this isn't any kind of blame on any parents or, you know, anyone involved.

18:08.223 --> 18:10.286
[SPEAKER_01]: I think it was just the world at that time.

18:10.967 --> 18:15.755
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, back when people would hitchhike and it just seemed like you assumed the best in people.

18:16.876 --> 18:21.904
[SPEAKER_01]: And you'd lived in this

18:22.019 --> 18:29.267
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, at 14 years old, I know that I would have a really hard time with my daughter just getting out of bus and going across town by herself, you know.

18:30.088 --> 18:40.700
[SPEAKER_01]: And then also to remember that these police departments, they didn't really have the ability to to work with each other in different cities and departments and things of that nature.

18:40.760 --> 18:49.410
[SPEAKER_01]: So, you know,

18:49.390 --> 18:54.816
[SPEAKER_01]: hudges and, and there are assumptions and things of that nature.

18:54.936 --> 19:12.917
[SPEAKER_01]: So, you know, just thinking about this from an investigative standpoint, you know, if there was somebody that was in Mount Holly that was maybe on the radar that the police and Burlington didn't know about, you know, these people could operate under the radar a lot easier than they can today.

19:13.597 --> 19:18.503
[SPEAKER_01]: So again, any case

19:18.871 --> 19:22.537
[SPEAKER_01]: you know, they just don't get those answers is absolutely heartbreaking.

19:22.617 --> 19:28.926
[SPEAKER_01]: So if I had to put this on the Debel test, which you know, I do every week for me, this is going to be a 10 across the board.

19:28.986 --> 19:37.960
[SPEAKER_01]: But as always, I want to hear from you, the listeners, the locksmith, where does the disappearance of Margaret Allen Fox fall on your Debel test?
