[John]: In November 1989, Amanda Mandy Stavick was 18 years old, and living in the town of Acne, Washington.

[John]: Mandy's parents had divorced after her older brother Brent had been shot and killed in Anchorage in 1975.

[John]: On November 24th, 1989, Mandy was home for Thanksgiving, having just started her first year at Central Washington University and recently graduating from Mount Baker High School.

[John]: That day the family had a large lunch of holiday leftovers, and afterward at around 150 in the afternoon, Mandy decided to go for a run, one that she had taken many times before.

[John]: Now Mandy's mother, Mary, usually would ride her bike alongside her daughter when she ran.

[John]: Mandy was not the type of girl who would just take off without letting someone know where she was, and when none of her friends had seen or heard from her, Mary knew something was terribly wrong, so she contacted the local police to report her daughter missing.

[John]: Now the search and rescue team was immediately dispatched and investigators spoke with witnesses in the area.

[John]: They learned that a friend had seen Mandy run by her home while she was headed toward the river.

[John]: Now, when news of Mandy's disappearance reached the community, they quickly jumped into help, with neighbors and friends searching roadways, train tracks, and anywhere they could think of.

[John]: Meanwhile, the police used helicopters, searched by horseback, and put a boat in the river, all in hopes of finding the missing girl.

[John]: During the search, investigators found tire tracks in the dirt off the side of the road, and footprints located in the same spot indicated that someone had gotten to the car's passenger side.

[John]: And when taken to that area, Cairo, the German Shepherd, seemed to cower in fear.

[John]: The search would continue over the following days, with Mary telling the press that she hadn't been able to sleep, saying that she thought about things like Ted Bundy and the Green River Killer, and praying that this wasn't the case.

[John]: Just three days after Mandy had gone missing, officers had been searching the south fork of the Nooksack River, walking up and down the banks as a patrol boat moved through the water, looking for any trace of the missing girl.

[John]: She was faced down in mostly nude, wearing only 10 issues, socks, and a wrist watch.

[John]: Investigators on site could tell that Mandy's body had not been carried very far down the river, leading them to believe that she was left unconscious in the water and causing her to drown.

[John]: And the state of the body suggested that she had also been sexually assaulted.

[John]: But it was the medical examiner who was able to paint a more detailed picture of what had happened to Mandy that day.

[John]: Scratches on her legs indicated that she had run through blackberry bushes in the woods, attempting to get away from her attacker.

[John]: Additionally, the examiner found bleeding under the top right side of the scalp and traces of semen.

[John]: water was also found in Mandy's lungs, helping investigators determine exactly what had happened to the teenager.

[John]: At some point during the attack, she had tried to escape, running naked through the woods, but sadly her attacker caught up to her, striking Mandy in the head and knocking her unconscious before dumping her body to be carried down

[John]: Meanwhile, investigators collected any evidence they could from the scene, including footprints and any forensic evidence.

[John]: But in 1989, DNA testing was very new, and it was being used primarily by the FBI.

[John]: Detectives check the sex offender registry, even going door-to-door to conduct interviews, but there were few leads, and any local suspects were eventually cleared.

[John]: The man who would later be identified as the Green River Killer, but who would yet to be caught.

[John]: You see, at the time, Ridgeway had been actively killing women in the Seattle area, less than two hours away from the rule town of Acne.

[John]: However, DNA found on Ridgeways victims would prove that the Green River killer had not been involved.

[John]: Mandy's funeral would take place at the Mount Baker High School Auditorium in December of 1989.

[John]: Meanwhile, investigators continued to work the case, talking to classmates and former boyfriends, but still, there was nothing.

[John]: And as time went on, Mandy's murder felt like it would never be solved, and the case would eventually go cold.

[John]: But in 2007, 18 years after her murder, Mandy's case would be given a fresh set of eyes.

[John]: Detective Kevin Bowie was given the opportunity to work on any cold case that he'd like, and he chose Mandy's.

[John]: Bowie had grown up and act me, and the fact that Mandy's murder had never been solved didn't sit well with him.

[John]: So we began reading and sorting through thousands of documents that have been collected over years of working the case.

[John]: And in 2010, he began testing the DNA evidence collected at the scenes again, as it was now much easier and more widely accessible.

[John]: Investigators began by doing DNA sweeps of people who live in the area or were registered sex offenders at the time, even traveling to Cambodia to interview a potential suspect.

[John]: When a woman from Acme came forward with a new piece of information, in June of 2013, Heather Batchstrom and Maryly Anderson had decided to take their children to a water park.

[John]: And while there they ended up in a group of moms, all chatting about their families, lives, and their hometown of Acme, it was then that one of the mother's brought up Mandy's case and how it had stuck with her for all of these years.

[John]: One night, a few years after Mandy's death, Bass had actually come by her house, telling Anderson that he had been out hunting and asking to use the phone.

[John]: But after this discussion, Marley Anderson decided it was time to call the police and share her suspicions, describing Bass as being odd, anti-social, and sexually aggressive.

[John]: So detectives began taking a deeper look into Bass and his background, and the first thing that jumped out was that he had lived on the same road as the Stovic family.

[John]: They also learned that shortly after the murder, Bass had suddenly moved from the area, relocating to a nearby county.

[John]: It was while talking that Bass claimed to have no recollection of Mandy or her case.

[John]: Mandy's murder was a huge case that impacted the community deeply, and they found it odd that Bass would claim to have no memory of it.

[John]: worse when asked if he'd be willing to provide a sample of his DNA, he refused, saying that he frequently watched crime shows and knows that innocent people go to jail.

[John]: They knew they didn't have enough evidence for a judge to issue a warrant, but their gut said that bass was involved.
