01:06.111 --> 01:15.855
[SPEAKER_00]: And just when we thought Summer was over, I don't know about y'all, but here in Tennessee, we are in the middle of another massive heat wave, got up to 101 yesterday, which is very, very hot.

01:15.995 --> 01:19.917
[SPEAKER_00]: So, I know the kids are going back to school, but hopefully they're staying cool.

01:20.337 --> 01:24.959
[SPEAKER_00]: And just want to say thank you for letting me hang out with you while you were doing whatever it is you got going on today.

[SPEAKER_00]: just appreciate you letting me be part of your day.

01:28.222 --> 01:31.365
[SPEAKER_00]: So I know last week we said, hey, schools back.

01:31.645 --> 01:39.273
[SPEAKER_00]: So we are diving into full episodes and I have to tell you the one I brought for you this week is definitely a heavy hitter.

01:39.753 --> 01:45.959
[SPEAKER_00]: It is one that I was not familiar with and when I researched it now, I kind of wished that I wasn't because

01:47.041 --> 01:54.549
[SPEAKER_00]: Again, for me, it was just very heartbreaking and very tragic and I think you will understand why as we go through the episode.

01:54.649 --> 01:58.013
[SPEAKER_00]: So with that being said, we're going to quit the Gabby Gabby.

01:58.433 --> 02:02.078
[SPEAKER_00]: Get back into the stabby stabby breakdown of full case for you this week.

02:02.438 --> 02:04.520
[SPEAKER_00]: Let's dive into this week's story.

02:05.121 --> 02:18.127
[SPEAKER_00]: It was September 2, 2016, the Friday before Labor Day weekend, and Lauren Landa Vazzo, and Michaela Smith, both 13 years old, were walking home from their middle school in Wichitaf Falls, Texas.

02:19.168 --> 02:20.969
[SPEAKER_00]: Lauren and Michaela were best friends.

02:21.650 --> 02:25.272
[SPEAKER_00]: They lived in the same neighborhood and took the same root home every day.

02:25.933 --> 02:30.856
[SPEAKER_00]: Lauren had a very close relationship to her parents, Bianca and Vernon, and Landa Vazzo.

02:31.597 --> 02:34.499
[SPEAKER_00]: She was the baby of the family, having two older brothers.

02:34.999 --> 02:39.863
[SPEAKER_00]: Lauren was kind to compassion it and describe by her parents as being a social butterfly.

02:40.721 --> 02:45.885
[SPEAKER_00]: Like most teenagers, school was not her favorite, but she made good grades and she stayed out of trouble.

02:46.566 --> 02:49.188
[SPEAKER_00]: Spending time with friends in her middle school boyfriend.

02:50.088 --> 02:53.571
[SPEAKER_00]: Michaela, live nearby, and the girls were joined at the hip.

02:54.412 --> 02:59.596
[SPEAKER_00]: She grew up in a religious home, the daughter of a teacher and a pastor, and the third of four children.

03:00.396 --> 03:03.599
[SPEAKER_00]: Like Lauren, she too had a big heart and did well in school.

03:04.838 --> 03:12.604
[SPEAKER_00]: As the pair walked, they chatted about typical 13-year-old girl topics, including boys that they liked at school and weekend plans.

03:13.444 --> 03:18.208
[SPEAKER_00]: The school year had just started shortly before, so both girls were looking forward to the holiday.

03:19.314 --> 03:26.338
[SPEAKER_00]: Lorna McKayla continued towards home, laughing and joking, neither knowing that they were being hunted by a killer.

03:26.938 --> 03:30.080
[SPEAKER_00]: Lorna McKayla rounded a corner headed into an alleyway.

03:30.840 --> 03:35.723
[SPEAKER_00]: Now all the kids in the neighborhood would use this alley as a shortcut on the way home from school.

03:36.723 --> 03:40.325
[SPEAKER_00]: As they walked, a gold SUV screeched up beside them.

03:40.946 --> 03:43.007
[SPEAKER_00]: The girls obviously startled stopped.

03:43.844 --> 03:49.967
[SPEAKER_00]: The driver, later described as a younger-looking man, just stared at the teenagers, looking them up and down.

03:51.127 --> 03:58.110
[SPEAKER_00]: Lauren and Michaela rightfully disturbed, turned and continued to walk, and it was then that shots ring out.

03:59.070 --> 04:04.793
[SPEAKER_00]: The driver of the gold vehicle pulled an AR-15 type 22 caliber rifle and fired.

04:10.017 --> 04:16.728
[SPEAKER_00]: But her adrenaline kicked in and she managed to turn and run, fleeing for her life with blood running down her chest.

04:17.589 --> 04:21.114
[SPEAKER_00]: But as she ran, she noticed that her best friend was not beside her.

04:22.298 --> 04:24.860
[SPEAKER_00]: Michaela turned to see Lauren lying on the pavement.

04:25.521 --> 04:29.384
[SPEAKER_00]: She screamed out for help running towards another group of kids who were walking home.

04:29.984 --> 04:32.926
[SPEAKER_00]: Colapsing in front of them is the goal that she'd be spread away.

04:33.947 --> 04:40.172
[SPEAKER_00]: As she lay on the ground, Michaela managed to use her cell phone to call her mother, saying, Mommy, I've been shot.

04:40.773 --> 04:41.853
[SPEAKER_00]: And Lauren isn't moving.

04:42.394 --> 04:44.195
[SPEAKER_00]: People nearby heard the gunfire,

04:46.920 --> 04:49.142
[SPEAKER_03]: I don't know if I'll do it.

04:49.222 --> 05:14.623
[SPEAKER_03]: I'm gonna eat it then, and if you want 40, 30, 30, 30, 30, 30, 30, 30, 30, 30, 30, 30, 30, 30, 30, 30, 30, 30, 30, 30, 30, 30, 30, 30, 30, 30, 30, 30, 30, 30, 30, 30, 30, 30, 30, 30, 30, 30, 30, 30, 30, 30, 30, 30, 30, 30, 30, 30, 30, 30, 30, 30, 30, 30, 30, 30, 30, 30, 30, 30, 30, 30, 30, 30, 30, 30, 30, 30, 30, 30, 30, 30, 30, 30, 30, 30, 30, 30, 30, 30, 30, 30, 30, 30, 30, 30, 30, 30, 30, 30, 30, 30, 30, 30, 30, 30, 30, 30, 30, 30,

05:21.093 --> 05:29.458
[SPEAKER_00]: Police and emergency vehicles were dispatched immediately, meanwhile Bianca Landovazo was home, waiting for Lauren to return from school.

05:30.538 --> 05:37.202
[SPEAKER_00]: In an interview, Bianca told police that a friend had pulled up to their house, jumping out and asking if Lauren had made it home.

05:38.183 --> 05:43.646
[SPEAKER_00]: Bianca told the friend that she hadn't gotten back yet, but she wanted to know why, to which the friend responded,

05:45.688 --> 05:49.874
[SPEAKER_00]: It was then that Bianca fled from the home, running on foot to the scene.

05:50.716 --> 05:55.723
[SPEAKER_00]: She turned a corner to see a large number of people, all in disbelief of what they were witnessing.

05:56.724 --> 06:01.186
[SPEAKER_00]: And as Bianca made her way through the crowd, she was faced with every parent's nightmare.

06:01.826 --> 06:04.487
[SPEAKER_00]: Lauren, her daughter, lying in the street.

06:04.947 --> 06:11.390
[SPEAKER_00]: Vernon, Linda Vazo, would arrive at the scene soon after, riding in the ambulance's EMT's try to save his daughter's life.

06:12.030 --> 06:16.132
[SPEAKER_00]: But sadly, Lauren would be pronounced dead upon arriving at the hospital.

06:16.957 --> 06:18.538
[SPEAKER_00]: Michaela was rushed to surgery.

06:19.179 --> 06:27.145
[SPEAKER_00]: Doctors planned out removing the bullet from her chest, but decided that it would lead to more damage, opting to leave an in place in hoping that her body would reject it.

06:28.186 --> 06:30.327
[SPEAKER_00]: Luckily, Michaela would survive.

06:31.408 --> 06:42.117
[SPEAKER_00]: The medical examiner would later determine that Lauren Landovazo had been struck 15 times, taking rounds to the hand, chest, liver, spinal column, and shoulder.

06:42.937 --> 06:44.558
[SPEAKER_00]: But it was two rounds to her head

06:47.413 --> 06:51.336
[SPEAKER_00]: It was also determined that the shooter had fired from only three feet away.

06:52.577 --> 06:55.880
[SPEAKER_00]: Meanwhile, police were now on the hunt for Lawrence Killer.

06:56.501 --> 07:01.105
[SPEAKER_00]: And once Michaela was awake and stable, she was able to give investigators her statement.

07:02.172 --> 07:08.078
[SPEAKER_00]: She told police that the shooter was a young white male with shaggy brown hair, a big nose and acne.

07:08.719 --> 07:19.109
[SPEAKER_00]: Police chief Manuel Burego held a press conference and he asked that the shaken community stay vigilant and requested anyone with information either big or small to come forward.

07:20.012 --> 07:34.140
[SPEAKER_00]: Additionally, witnesses at the scene along with Michaela Statement provided enough detail for a composite sketch to be released, which at all fault crime stoppers offered a $2,500 reward for any information that led to the shooters arrest.

07:34.780 --> 07:47.888
[SPEAKER_00]: But the community desperate to catch this killer wanted to help too, and local businesses banded together to bring that award up to $8,500, and while tips did begin to come in, many led nowhere.

07:48.588 --> 07:53.071
[SPEAKER_00]: But, about 48 hours after the shooting, investigators would catch a break.

07:53.991 --> 08:01.056
[SPEAKER_00]: A woman called in saying that she had seen the composites catch of the shooter, and she wanted to share something that had happened on the day of the murder.

08:02.517 --> 08:11.242
[SPEAKER_00]: After the violent events took place, the community showed an amazing outpouring of support, turning the crime scene into a makeshift memorial for the girls.

08:12.514 --> 08:18.516
[SPEAKER_00]: The woman caller and her fiance had been visiting the site to offer support when they saw a gold SUV pull-up.

08:19.297 --> 08:21.998
[SPEAKER_00]: The car stopped for a moment and then continued driving.

08:22.978 --> 08:28.601
[SPEAKER_00]: Now, this vehicle matched the description of the shooter's vehicle and something told the woman to follow the car.

08:29.261 --> 08:33.903
[SPEAKER_00]: The driver pulled into the nearby fountain gate apartment complex and exited his vehicle.

08:34.742 --> 08:42.808
[SPEAKER_00]: The woman noticed that he was a younger man with shaggy brown hair, and after exiting, he removed something long and wrapped in a blanket.

08:43.749 --> 08:47.732
[SPEAKER_00]: The tips are said they noticed what seemed to be a gun barrel sticking out at the end.

08:48.153 --> 08:54.037
[SPEAKER_00]: The driver then walked into their apartment, but would return to the vehicle empty-handed before driving off again.

08:55.218 --> 08:59.441
[SPEAKER_00]: The woman took down the vehicle's license plate and immediately contacted the authorities.

09:00.304 --> 09:03.205
[SPEAKER_00]: Police were dispatched and they set out to find the vehicle.

09:04.005 --> 09:09.027
[SPEAKER_00]: Now luckily, an officer was nearby and was actually able to pull over the SUV rather quickly.

09:09.567 --> 09:13.769
[SPEAKER_00]: It was at that point that the driver gave consent for the officer to search the vehicle.

09:14.229 --> 09:20.151
[SPEAKER_00]: During which, a brass shell casing was located on the floor, but unfortunately there was no gun.

09:20.592 --> 09:25.493
[SPEAKER_00]: However, when searching the suspects backpack, the officer did find a pair of brass knuckles,

09:30.075 --> 09:32.238
[SPEAKER_00]: And that was enough to take the man into custody.

09:32.939 --> 09:37.004
[SPEAKER_00]: He would later be identified as 20-year-old Cody Austin Lot.

09:37.911 --> 09:46.476
[SPEAKER_00]: Lot was a loner with a spotty employment record and a fondness for recreational drugs, smoking weed and taking opioids since the age of 13.

09:47.417 --> 09:54.361
[SPEAKER_00]: He was now under arrest for the possession of a deadly weapon, and when taken in for questioning, he claimed to know nothing about the shooting.

09:55.082 --> 10:00.906
[SPEAKER_00]: But as investigators continued pressing, Cody Lot finally cracked, confessing to the murder

10:05.380 --> 10:15.944
[SPEAKER_00]: Lot told detectives that he had noticed Lauren walking home as he passed her in his vehicle, describing her eyes like gems, and deciding that he wasn't going to let anyone else enjoy them.

10:16.884 --> 10:24.607
[SPEAKER_00]: Lot had had girlfriends in the past, but none of them seemed to last very long, feeling that he had been ignored and disrespected in those relationships.

10:25.587 --> 10:31.870
[SPEAKER_00]: And after seeing Lauren that day, he began watching her walk home from school every day from his apartment window.

10:32.853 --> 10:46.123
[SPEAKER_00]: This actually went on for over a year, as Lot created a fantasy world in his head, one in which he and Lauren were committed to one another, but one afternoon, the fantasy would be shattered.

10:46.723 --> 10:56.611
[SPEAKER_00]: When Lot began to see Lauren walking home with her middle school boyfriend, this sent the man into a rage, believing that Lauren had betrayed their fictional relationship.

10:57.473 --> 11:04.056
[SPEAKER_00]: and it was then that he began planning, telling investigators that he consulted with the devil to plan his revenge.

11:05.236 --> 11:11.679
[SPEAKER_00]: On the day of the attack, Lot started the morning by smoking weed, lace with PCP and popping an opioid.

11:12.479 --> 11:18.342
[SPEAKER_00]: Then he retrieved the rifle from a stepfather's gun cabinet and waited, watching out of his window.

11:19.394 --> 11:30.650
[SPEAKER_00]: And when Lorna McKayla came into sight, he rushed to his vehicle, pulling up to the girls as they entered the alleyway, telling detectives that he had planned to kill McKayla as well, but he ran out of ammo.

11:31.860 --> 11:42.042
[SPEAKER_00]: After the brutal attack, Lot drove to a nearby field to dump the gun, but after getting home he panicked, realizing that a stepfather would notice that the gun was missing.

11:42.922 --> 11:49.404
[SPEAKER_00]: So when he believed the coast was clear, he drove back to the field, recovered the weapon and placed it back in the cabinet.

11:49.884 --> 11:54.525
[SPEAKER_00]: Cody Austin Lot was arrested again, and this time he was charged with one count of first

11:59.273 --> 12:03.097
[SPEAKER_00]: A search warrant was executed for the apartment that Lot shared with his family.

12:03.477 --> 12:07.801
[SPEAKER_00]: And there are detectives recovered the rifle, covered in dirt and grass from the field.

12:08.101 --> 12:18.331
[SPEAKER_00]: Lot's electronic devices were also seized, and when his phone was searched, he was found to have child sexual abuse materials, adding child pornography to his list of current charges.

12:19.267 --> 12:34.501
[SPEAKER_00]: Now, an initial trial date would be set for March of 2018, but lots lawyers were able to have it delayed until September of that year, telling the court that their client had been deemed by a mental health expert as presently incompetent to stand trial.

12:35.402 --> 12:50.193
[SPEAKER_00]: You see, Lot had been diagnosed with a skit to effective disorder in 2015, so when the trial began in September of 2018, he would plead not guilty by reason of insanity, despite the detailed and chilling confession that he had given to police.

13:04.685 --> 13:13.251
[SPEAKER_00]: But now the defense would argue that due to his mental health and substance abuse issues, Cody Lot was not responsible for the violent attack that took place that day.

13:13.591 --> 13:20.536
[SPEAKER_00]: They also argue that the search of the vehicle in the seizure of the brass knuckles was unlawful and violated their client civil rights.

13:21.157 --> 13:27.541
[SPEAKER_00]: However, the presiding judge disagreed, noting that Lot had given consent to search before the evidence was found.

13:28.362 --> 13:29.742
[SPEAKER_00]: And the prosecution was ready.

13:30.302 --> 13:34.563
[SPEAKER_00]: They argued that mental illness or not, lot new right from wrong.

13:35.064 --> 13:40.965
[SPEAKER_00]: He had planned the attack, tossed the gun, and gone back to retrieve it, knowing that a stepfather would notice it.

13:41.745 --> 13:45.586
[SPEAKER_00]: All of which pointed to a killer who had meticulously planned out his crime.

13:46.666 --> 13:51.927
[SPEAKER_00]: Makala Smith would also testify against Lot, telling the jury about the heartbreaking day

13:55.390 --> 13:58.931
[SPEAKER_00]: Additionally, other students who were walking home that day would testify.

13:59.251 --> 14:06.814
[SPEAKER_00]: And on September 20, 2018, after only 40 minutes of deliberation, the jury sided with the prosecution.

14:07.474 --> 14:16.517
[SPEAKER_00]: Sentencing Cody Austin Lot to life in prison for the murder of Lauren Londobazo, and 20 years in prison for the aggravated assault of Michaela Smith.

14:16.937 --> 14:20.559
[SPEAKER_00]: However, he would be eligible for parole after only 30 years.

14:21.779 --> 14:25.423
[SPEAKER_00]: which did not sit well with Bianca and Vernon, Landavazo.

14:26.083 --> 14:30.968
[SPEAKER_00]: So they decided to fight not only for their daughter, but for other victims as well.

14:31.728 --> 14:45.522
[SPEAKER_00]: Fighting for what's known as Lawrence Law, a law that says anyone who takes the life of a person under the age of 15 in Texas would automatically be given the death penalty or life in prison with no parole eligibility.

14:46.377 --> 15:00.983
[SPEAKER_00]: The Lana Vazos also filed a $1 million civil suit against Lot's mother and stepfather, in which they argued negligence, saying that Lot had used their gun and ammunition as well as their vehicle to carry out his crimes.

15:01.863 --> 15:07.045
[SPEAKER_00]: Lot did not have a valid driver's license, but he was allowed to drive the family's SUV.

15:08.084 --> 15:16.392
[SPEAKER_00]: At the time of the murder, lots parents were out of the country, leaving their son with a known mental health diagnosis home with the dangerous weapon.

15:16.773 --> 15:21.437
[SPEAKER_00]: But unfortunately, I couldn't find any information on the status or outcome of that lawsuit.

15:21.817 --> 15:25.301
[SPEAKER_00]: But I do know that Bianca and Vernon missed their daughter every day.

15:25.921 --> 15:32.188
[SPEAKER_00]: Choosing to remember Lauren for how kind and loving she was, and the way that she always brought a smile to their faces.

15:32.921 --> 15:37.005
[SPEAKER_00]: So that's this week's case, and as always, I just want to wrap things up by sharing some closing thoughts.

15:37.466 --> 15:50.720
[SPEAKER_00]: So as I mentioned at the top of the episode, I had a really hard time with this one, and it was one of those stories where, you know, every once in a while, there's cases where we should go back and be like, man, I just, my brain felt better when I didn't know about this one.

15:51.361 --> 15:57.644
[SPEAKER_00]: And I mentioned it all the time, but this one as a parent, as a dad, it really struck a chord with me.

15:58.244 --> 16:07.268
[SPEAKER_00]: You know, my daughter is seven coming up on eight, not much younger than Lauren was when she was murdered and Michaela when she was shot.

16:08.149 --> 16:10.170
[SPEAKER_00]: And, you know, as my child gets older,

16:11.115 --> 16:17.016
[SPEAKER_00]: I was just talking about this with my wife today, but there's going to be more of those outings, right?

16:17.076 --> 16:23.678
[SPEAKER_00]: Going places with friends and wanting to go to people's houses or, you know, can I go to the movie or the park with so-and-so?

16:23.818 --> 16:29.459
[SPEAKER_00]: And it's these kind of things that I think when she gets that age or are going to stick with me.

16:29.539 --> 16:33.360
[SPEAKER_00]: And I just can't help but thinking about Vernon and Bianca.

16:33.400 --> 16:36.581
[SPEAKER_00]: And just thinking about how this was just a normal day for them.

16:36.881 --> 16:39.962
[SPEAKER_00]: You know, their daughter went to school and was walking home

16:41.162 --> 16:59.667
[SPEAKER_00]: She normally did and had no idea that not only had somebody been watching her, but Cody lot had been watching her for a year, you know, just sitting in his apartment window, waiting for this child to come walking on the street, having this insane fantasy relationship in his

17:03.670 --> 17:22.851
[SPEAKER_00]: he was so delusioned that just seeing her with her boyfriend, you know, and, you know, I say boyfriend, I remember having girlfriends in middle school and it's just hand-holding, you know, we go to the skating ring on Friday nights and hold hands why we roller skated, you know, wasn't, you hear boyfriend

17:24.336 --> 17:42.228
[SPEAKER_00]: It's especially at this age, it's just such a child-like thing and to think that this 20-year-old man is just watching these children and creating these fantasies to the point where he feels betrayed by a child doing things that children do.

17:44.029 --> 18:03.486
[SPEAKER_00]: You know, this one was just really hard for me because I can't imagine what it would be like to start my day off and and again, you know, you just hug your kid goodbye, you tell them have a great day at school and they never come home and not only do they not come home, but they lose their life and such a horrific and terrible way and.

18:04.427 --> 18:21.642
[SPEAKER_00]: Again, the Lawson Law and his tragic, but also, you know, what Michaela has to go through and had to go through, it's is just as tragic as well, you know, thank God she survived, but having to stand and court and testify against the person who shot you in the chest.

18:22.443 --> 18:25.665
[SPEAKER_00]: And then, you know, this was 2016, it's 2026 now.

18:25.825 --> 18:33.108
[SPEAKER_00]: So, you know, at this point, Michaela's 23 years old, that's 10 years without her friend, without her best friend.

18:33.608 --> 18:37.290
[SPEAKER_00]: That's 10 years of living with a bullet, lodged in your chest.

18:37.350 --> 18:47.255
[SPEAKER_00]: It's a reminder that stays with you, but is in you physically every day of something terrible that happened to you.

18:48.235 --> 18:52.535
[SPEAKER_00]: and then thinking about these kids who they were just walking home from school and they had to witness this as well.

18:53.548 --> 19:03.571
[SPEAKER_00]: Yes, Lauren lost her life and Michaela was badly injured, but in a lot of ways this entire community was a victim of this violence that happened.

19:04.112 --> 19:19.217
[SPEAKER_00]: And I think part of this story for me that is so good to hear is number one, the community came together and supported these families in such an incredible way and putting up their own money and creating these visuals and

19:23.012 --> 19:36.376
[SPEAKER_00]: you know, just to know that Bianca and Vernon didn't let what happened to their daughter break them because I do think and hearing them talk in these interviews, that would have been the last thing that Lauren would have wanted.

19:36.996 --> 19:40.137
[SPEAKER_00]: But to know that they stayed together and

19:41.990 --> 19:55.480
[SPEAKER_00]: fought hard to get a lot past in her name, to not only be representative of her, but to also help other victims of these kinds of senseless and terribly violent crimes.

19:55.741 --> 19:56.861
[SPEAKER_00]: So for me,

19:57.802 --> 20:01.504
[SPEAKER_00]: When we're talking debble tests, this is a 10 out of 10 all day.

20:02.025 --> 20:15.192
[SPEAKER_00]: Again, as a parent, this is just something that I couldn't never imagine happening to me, and I'll be honest, I know I've talked about this before, but I don't know if I would have the same kind of resolve that Bianca and Vernon did.

20:15.392 --> 20:26.539
[SPEAKER_00]: You know, I can't say that having forbidden anything like this would ever happen in my life, I don't know if I would be able to continue in the same way or to be as strong as they were.

20:27.379 --> 20:32.443
[SPEAKER_00]: For me, this is a 10 out of 10, but as always, I want to hear from you, the listeners, the locksmith.

20:32.763 --> 20:36.366
[SPEAKER_00]: Where does the murder of Lauren Londavazo fall on your devil test?

20:36.386 --> 20:43.011
[SPEAKER_00]: You can let me know, reach out to me on Instagram, check locks pod, you can find the show on Twitter, check the locks, and even not in our Facebook group with a heck of you doing.
