[SPEAKER_01]: Detectives in Texas worked the case, but it would take over 20 years for the family to truly get closure.

01:48.674 --> 01:52.703
[SPEAKER_01]: Join me, John Connor, as I discussed the disappearance of Scott Dunn.

01:53.685 --> 01:55.729
[SPEAKER_01]: This is Check The Locks Podcast.

02:08.112 --> 02:12.560
[SPEAKER_01]: Hello and thank you for joining me as I dive into yet another truly terrifying true crime case.

02:12.760 --> 02:16.427
[SPEAKER_01]: Before we get started, as always, I hope you had a wonderful week, a wonderful weekend.

02:16.848 --> 02:20.274
[SPEAKER_01]: This episode is actually dropping on St. Patty's Day.

02:20.374 --> 02:32.196
[SPEAKER_01]: So hopefully at a good time, maybe when I got some drinks over the weekend, hopefully that hang over is finally wearing off, but you better have your green on if you're listening in this episode on St. Patrick's Day.

02:32.176 --> 02:34.618
[SPEAKER_01]: Hope it is a wonderful day for you.

02:35.559 --> 02:37.921
[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe you skipped the drinks like me this year.

02:37.961 --> 02:41.504
[SPEAKER_01]: We actually went to a Academy Awards party.

02:41.524 --> 02:43.126
[SPEAKER_01]: So I felt pretty fancy about that.

02:44.007 --> 02:46.309
[SPEAKER_01]: We had some friends who threw a party.

02:46.329 --> 02:49.291
[SPEAKER_01]: So me and Cara and the little one we all went together.

02:49.311 --> 02:52.254
[SPEAKER_01]: And we did the whole, you know, fill out the ballots.

02:52.274 --> 02:53.235
[SPEAKER_01]: Who do you think's gonna win?

02:53.295 --> 02:53.915
[SPEAKER_01]: There was a prize.

02:53.995 --> 02:57.999
[SPEAKER_01]: Unfortunately, I did not win, but I will say I was super excited.

02:58.019 --> 03:01.322
[SPEAKER_01]: I think I've talked about it before,

03:01.302 --> 03:16.368
[SPEAKER_01]: sinners has become one of my favorite movies I think just ever made, but definitely one of the best movies of 2025 and was so excited when Michael B. Jordan won best actor for that.

03:16.809 --> 03:21.437
[SPEAKER_01]: I also won best cinematography, best screenplay as well.

03:21.417 --> 03:22.619
[SPEAKER_01]: So I was really jazzed.

03:23.000 --> 03:26.748
[SPEAKER_01]: If you listen to the show for a while, I think you know, I am a big film fan.

03:26.768 --> 03:29.172
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm a huge fan of horror movies as well.

03:29.553 --> 03:34.403
[SPEAKER_01]: So to see the horror community kind of get some love there was definitely definitely exciting.

03:34.463 --> 03:40.675
[SPEAKER_01]: So hopefully whatever you did, whether you were, you know, knocking back some green beer or

03:40.655 --> 03:46.041
[SPEAKER_01]: Celebrating and eating some popcorn watching the Oscars, I just hope it was a great weekend for you a great week.

03:46.442 --> 03:47.803
[SPEAKER_01]: Also, I hope you stayed dry.

03:47.983 --> 03:53.169
[SPEAKER_01]: I know here in Tennessee and across the country, we got hammered with some pretty severe thunderstorms.

03:53.209 --> 03:55.512
[SPEAKER_01]: I know we had some tornado warnings around here as well.

03:55.973 --> 03:59.296
[SPEAKER_01]: So hopefully, y'all stayed dry and stayed safe.

03:59.957 --> 04:02.660
[SPEAKER_01]: And, you know, there wasn't any damage or anything like that.

04:02.901 --> 04:03.321
[SPEAKER_01]: But...

04:03.301 --> 04:05.910
[SPEAKER_01]: Uh, just happy to be back with you for this week's episode.

04:05.990 --> 04:16.163
[SPEAKER_01]: I will say this is one that I was not familiar with, so I'm very excited to cover it with you here, which I think, you know, definitely always love to hear from the listeners and the locksmiths.

04:16.413 --> 04:19.319
[SPEAKER_01]: how this case gets under your skin if it does it all.

04:19.781 --> 04:21.805
[SPEAKER_01]: So with that being said, I'm going to go ahead.

04:21.845 --> 04:23.148
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm going to quit the Gabby Gabby.

04:23.429 --> 04:25.052
[SPEAKER_01]: We're going to jump in the stabby stabby.

04:25.072 --> 04:27.578
[SPEAKER_01]: Let's break down this week's case.

04:28.279 --> 04:30.184
[SPEAKER_01]: Scott Dunn was a ladies man.

04:30.585 --> 04:33.932
[SPEAKER_01]: And he was known to date multiple women at the same time.

04:34.216 --> 04:41.647
[SPEAKER_01]: He was born Roger Scott Dunn in February of 1967, one of two sons to his parents, Jim and Mary.

04:42.668 --> 04:47.074
[SPEAKER_01]: Scott grew up well off in Philadelphia, before joining the military as a young man.

04:47.775 --> 04:56.848
[SPEAKER_01]: And after a stint in the service, he would move to Lubbock, Texas, finding a job in an electronics store where he would install sound systems and cars.

04:56.828 --> 05:00.254
[SPEAKER_01]: And in his free time, Scott continued to enjoy the ladies.

05:01.015 --> 05:05.443
[SPEAKER_01]: He was living with a girlfriend, a 28-year-old waitress named Lisa Hamilton.

05:06.205 --> 05:09.310
[SPEAKER_01]: While at the same time, being engaged to another woman.

05:10.412 --> 05:19.528
[SPEAKER_01]: Now on May 13, 1991, Scott attended a party at a friend's house after work, arriving in his yellow 1991 Camaro.

05:20.116 --> 05:27.980
[SPEAKER_01]: But at some point during the evening, Scott began feeling sick, and instead of driving home, he decided to spend the night on his friend's couch.

05:29.103 --> 05:32.353
[SPEAKER_01]: In the morning, Lisha Hamilton arrived to pick him up.

05:32.620 --> 05:39.047
[SPEAKER_01]: Now according to Hamilton, Scott was disheveled and obviously ill, so we took the day off from work to recover.

05:39.788 --> 05:45.434
[SPEAKER_01]: But the following morning, Lisa said that Scott had felt better and was ready to return to the electronics store.

05:46.235 --> 05:51.901
[SPEAKER_01]: She offered to drop him off on her way to work, but Scott declined, saying that friends were coming to pick him up.

05:52.902 --> 06:02.172
[SPEAKER_01]: But when they arrived and knocked on the door, Scott never answered.

06:02.489 --> 06:04.893
[SPEAKER_01]: Scott Dunn seemed to have simply vanished.

06:06.094 --> 06:14.647
[SPEAKER_01]: Now, two days later, Scott's father Jim received a call from a woman he didn't know, and on the other end of the phone was Lisha Hamilton.

06:15.709 --> 06:23.241
[SPEAKER_01]: She told Jim that a son had gone missing, sharing that the two had lived together for a few months, and that she had found his number on their phone bill.

06:24.382 --> 06:31.433
[SPEAKER_01]: Jim told Lisha that a son had never mentioned her, but he immediately contacted the

06:31.649 --> 06:35.653
[SPEAKER_01]: and investigators began to work the disappearance.

06:35.673 --> 06:45.885
[SPEAKER_01]: They started by speaking with friends, who shared that while it was normal for Scott to take off in party, he would always call to check in, and not hearing from him was definitely odd.

06:46.966 --> 06:57.117
[SPEAKER_01]: Investigators also spoke to Lisha Hamilton, and according to Hamilton, she had returned home from work to find no sign of Scott.

06:57.974 --> 07:03.361
[SPEAKER_01]: Alicia told detectives that she had noticed a large piece of carpet had been cut out from under the couch.

07:04.162 --> 07:06.926
[SPEAKER_01]: She then led investigators into the couple's bedroom.

07:07.988 --> 07:13.535
[SPEAKER_01]: It seemed that the carpet in the corner had been removed and replaced with the piece from underneath the couch.

07:14.477 --> 07:22.868
[SPEAKER_01]: And while examining the patch floor, investigators noticed a

07:23.354 --> 07:33.848
[SPEAKER_01]: But when the carpet was pulled back, they found that it had been duct taped to the foam padding beneath it, and it appeared that some of the substance had soaked through the padding to the concrete floor beneath.

07:34.790 --> 07:41.559
[SPEAKER_01]: There was also what seemed to be spots of blood on the base boards, but lumenol would be needed to verify the detective's theories.

07:42.400 --> 07:46.105
[SPEAKER_01]: So the room was sprayed, revealing a horrific scene.

07:46.186 --> 07:57.782
[SPEAKER_01]: Blood was found on the floor, the walls, and the ceiling, and it was obvious that something terribly violent had taken place, and whoever had done it went through great lengths to clean up the mess.

07:58.589 --> 08:06.260
[SPEAKER_01]: Now, because of the gruesome discovery, investigators believe that Scott Dunn had been murdered, but they still didn't know who would want him dead.

08:07.001 --> 08:08.924
[SPEAKER_01]: So they began looking into his past.

08:09.505 --> 08:14.252
[SPEAKER_01]: Scott had previously been arrested and charged with possession of cocaine, but it was a minor charge.

08:14.852 --> 08:17.496
[SPEAKER_01]: And the crime scene didn't suggest anything drug related.

08:18.237 --> 08:27.010
[SPEAKER_01]: But investigators did learn about Scott's multiple relationships, learning that he was engaged

08:27.462 --> 08:31.472
[SPEAKER_01]: And Lesha had also learned about the other woman only about a month earlier.

08:31.512 --> 08:35.182
[SPEAKER_01]: When Scott's Beyoncé called their apartment phone number.

08:36.285 --> 08:42.180
[SPEAKER_01]: It definitely didn't look good, but investigators wondered if it would be enough to drive Lesha to murder.

08:42.768 --> 08:49.698
[SPEAKER_01]: Meanwhile, Lisa's dating contact with Scott's father, Jim, calling him to provide updates on the investigation.

08:50.318 --> 08:53.843
[SPEAKER_01]: And during one of those calls, Lisa made a strange request.

08:54.664 --> 08:59.451
[SPEAKER_01]: Asking Jim Dunn if she could have his sons 1991 Yellow Camaro.

09:00.272 --> 09:04.438
[SPEAKER_01]: But Lisa had no idea that Jim was recording their conversations.

09:05.330 --> 09:12.818
[SPEAKER_01]: Now, in the call, Jim could be heard telling Lisha that he would give her the car when the investigation was over, as he had promised to do previously.

09:13.599 --> 09:17.083
[SPEAKER_01]: But Lisha didn't want to wait, saying she needed it immediately.

09:17.123 --> 09:27.214
[SPEAKER_01]: The strange interaction led investigators to look deeper into Lisha Hamilton's background, and they learned that she had a past arrest in New York for embezzlement.

09:28.135 --> 09:32.620
[SPEAKER_01]: Now again, this was concerning, but investigators still had questions.

09:32.870 --> 09:37.883
[SPEAKER_01]: If Lisa was involved, why would she help the police by pointing out the spots on the carpet?

09:38.705 --> 09:41.231
[SPEAKER_01]: So they went back to the calls that Jim had recorded.

09:41.272 --> 09:49.613
[SPEAKER_01]: In another, Lisa told Jim that she believed a man named Tim Smith had played a role in his son's disappearance.

09:49.930 --> 09:54.817
[SPEAKER_01]: Smith lived in a neighboring apartment, and it grown up in a very strict and religious home.

09:55.598 --> 10:05.072
[SPEAKER_01]: Now because of this information, investigators decided to take a closer look at him, and they discovered that Smith did not show up for work on the day that Scott Dunne had disappeared.

10:05.974 --> 10:09.639
[SPEAKER_01]: So detectives decided to visit his apartment and ask him some questions.

10:10.601 --> 10:15.668
[SPEAKER_01]: When they arrived, they found that Smith was in the process of packing to move out.

10:16.238 --> 10:24.409
[SPEAKER_01]: While speaking with him, investigators noticed a role of duct tape on a shelf, which looked very similar to the tape found in Scott Duns' apartment.

10:25.110 --> 10:28.294
[SPEAKER_01]: So it was collected at the scene and sent off for forensic testing.

10:29.215 --> 10:36.305
[SPEAKER_01]: The fibers on the front and back, as well as the adhesive on the tape, were tested against the sample taken from the bloody scene.

10:36.965 --> 10:40.390
[SPEAKER_01]: And when the results came back, they matched perfectly.

10:41.078 --> 10:41.779
[SPEAKER_01]: but there was more.

10:41.799 --> 10:50.368
[SPEAKER_01]: Investigators found fibers stuck to the side of the role as well, which, when tested, matched the fibers in Scott's carpeting.

10:51.489 --> 10:57.876
[SPEAKER_01]: Authorities now believe that Tim Smith had played a role in the murder of Scott Dunn, but there was still one problem.

10:58.576 --> 11:04.943
[SPEAKER_01]: Police had no idea where Scott's body was, which would make prosecuting a murder very difficult.

11:05.716 --> 11:11.545
[SPEAKER_01]: Because of this, the case would start to grow cold, and a full year would pass with no charges filed.

11:12.526 --> 11:21.199
[SPEAKER_01]: Now, as Scott's father, this obviously didn't sit well with Jim Dunn, so he decided to do something about it, approaching the V-Doc Society.

11:21.780 --> 11:26.547
[SPEAKER_01]: A group of forensic scientists who gather once a year to review unsolved murder cases.

11:27.308 --> 11:30.373
[SPEAKER_01]: And after hearing Jim's story, they agreed to help.

11:43.111 --> 11:56.396
[SPEAKER_01]: Now, upon reviewing the information, the society concluded that Scott Dunne had been murdered in the corner of his bedroom, most likely beaten the death with a blunt object, and they believe that Lesha Hamilton almost certainly played a role.

11:57.297 --> 12:03.128
[SPEAKER_01]: With their findings in hand, Jim and the VDox Society approach the Texas District Attorney.

12:03.243 --> 12:17.665
[SPEAKER_01]: Now, at the time, under Texas law, you couldn't charge someone with murder without there being a body, but the society believed that the blood itself was, in fact, part of the human body, arguing that it was technically connective tissue.

12:18.507 --> 12:23.775
[SPEAKER_01]: Now, fortunately, the DA sided with the scientists, and they agreed to move forward with the case.

12:24.676 --> 12:28.542
[SPEAKER_01]: Authorities believed that Lisa Hamilton had used Tim Smith.

12:28.792 --> 12:35.749
[SPEAKER_01]: He grown up in a very conservative household, and when he met Lisha, he fell under the spell of this wild and flirtatious woman.

12:36.571 --> 12:40.300
[SPEAKER_01]: But they didn't have the evidence they needed to link Lisha to the crime.

12:41.303 --> 12:45.012
[SPEAKER_01]: So they re-examine the duct tape to make sure nothing had been missed.

12:45.548 --> 13:05.251
[SPEAKER_01]: At this time, they noticed hairs in the tape that they had not previously tested, and when the results came back, it was determined that the samples were a match to Lisha Hamilton and Scott Dunn, but there were no hairs from Tim Smith, meaning Lisha was the one who had replaced the carpet square after the murder.

13:06.353 --> 13:14.222
[SPEAKER_01]: Now, at this time, five years had passed, but Hamilton and Smith were finally arrested and

13:15.282 --> 13:25.171
[SPEAKER_01]: The prosecution argued that Lesha had been jealous of her boyfriend's invidelity, so she decided to take revenge, attacking Scott as he slept and beating him to death with a blunt object.

13:25.972 --> 13:31.017
[SPEAKER_01]: When it was over, Lesha Hamilton and Tim Smith worked together to dispose of the body.

13:31.737 --> 13:35.220
[SPEAKER_01]: And after, the pair cleaned up the blood and patched up the carpet.

13:36.261 --> 13:42.387
[SPEAKER_01]: In 1997, Hamilton and Smith were charged separately, and both were found guilty.

13:42.417 --> 13:50.327
[SPEAKER_01]: Now, oddly for Texas, Lisha would receive a 20-year sentence, most likely because they weren't able to locate Scott's body at the time.

13:50.768 --> 13:57.356
[SPEAKER_01]: While Tim Smith would receive 10-years probation, with the jury believing that Smith only helped Lisha move the body.

13:58.377 --> 14:05.186
[SPEAKER_01]: There had now been legal justice and both killers were convicted, but for Jim Dunn, there was still yet to be closure.

14:05.987 --> 14:10.753
[SPEAKER_01]: His son's remains hadn't been recovered, and he longed to lay his body to rest.

14:11.375 --> 14:14.318
[SPEAKER_01]: years would pass, but there was still nothing.

14:15.179 --> 14:23.930
[SPEAKER_01]: But all of that would change in 2012, when a work crew discovered something strange in a sewer system near Scott Dunn's old apartment.

14:23.950 --> 14:25.512
[SPEAKER_01]: Uncovered skeletal remains.

14:26.333 --> 14:33.501
[SPEAKER_01]: The body had been wrapped in a blanket and vinyl sheets for a waterbed, unintentionally helping to preserve the body.

14:33.700 --> 14:37.765
[SPEAKER_01]: a gold ring which belonged to Scott's grandmother was also found at the scene.

14:38.486 --> 14:42.711
[SPEAKER_01]: But it would be a positive match through dental records that finally gave a definite answer.

14:43.412 --> 14:51.823
[SPEAKER_01]: And on June 16, 2012, Jim Dunn was finally able to bring his son home, giving Scott the proper burial that he deserved.

14:52.424 --> 15:03.117
[SPEAKER_01]: So that's this week's case and as always before we get to the deadbolt test, I just want to take a minute to share some final thoughts with him and kind of wrap up how this case ended up sitting with me.

15:03.552 --> 15:11.352
[SPEAKER_01]: These are those types of cases that I really enjoy covering because of the fact that Jim Dunn was so persistent.

15:11.517 --> 15:20.330
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, it would have been so easy and we've seen before where these cases just go colder and colder and colder and the family is just waiting.

15:20.530 --> 15:40.360
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, they're looking for closure, they're looking for answers and Jim took matters into his own hands to say, I'm going to find out exactly what happened to my son and I'm also going to make sure that whoever was responsible for this is prosecuted in some way shape or formed and he was able to do exactly that using the VDox Society.

15:40.340 --> 15:47.729
[SPEAKER_01]: it was just so inspirational because I think about it sometimes in heaven forbid if anything were to ever happen to my family.

15:48.530 --> 16:05.250
[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know if I would have that courage, that Jim had, and that drive, you know, it would be so hard not to just be broken and to see someone like Jim

16:06.412 --> 16:12.585
[SPEAKER_01]: It was incredible to hear about and to get that information.

16:12.606 --> 16:17.476
[SPEAKER_01]: So again, just one of those things where I really respected it.

16:18.659 --> 16:23.549
[SPEAKER_01]: In the research, there is an episode on forensic files about this case.

16:24.912 --> 16:25.213
[SPEAKER_01]: And

16:26.223 --> 16:31.035
[SPEAKER_01]: One of the members of the Vdox Society told Jim, they said, hey, you're the morning dad.

16:31.216 --> 16:34.003
[SPEAKER_01]: And Jim said, I know I'm supposed to be.

16:34.023 --> 16:42.865
[SPEAKER_01]: And he's like, well, when you get to stop being the morning dad and be the pissed off dad, the dad who is fighting for his son.

16:42.845 --> 16:45.408
[SPEAKER_01]: And I think that really resonated with me.

16:45.469 --> 16:58.646
[SPEAKER_01]: So I, again, just thought that was a very interesting aspect and very inspirational to see this man who was probably feeling so broken inside, just continue to push on to make sure that a son wasn't forgotten and that justice was served.

16:59.227 --> 17:07.198
[SPEAKER_01]: The other thing that really gets under my skin about this case is the fact that both Alicia Hamilton and Tim Smith are out there walking around.

17:07.735 --> 17:14.227
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, these are people who they could be anywhere from what I understand after she was released from prison.

17:15.009 --> 17:20.018
[SPEAKER_01]: Lisa was denied parole twice, but finally served her full 20 years and was released.

17:20.459 --> 17:22.623
[SPEAKER_01]: And nobody really knows what's happened to her since then.

17:22.703 --> 17:24.727
[SPEAKER_01]: There's no presence on the internet.

17:24.847 --> 17:29.536
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, there was nothing I could really find as to where she ended up or what she was doing.

17:29.656 --> 17:30.638
[SPEAKER_01]: So.

17:30.871 --> 17:37.121
[SPEAKER_01]: it's scary to think that someone who is capable of doing this could be your next or neighbor and you would never know.

17:37.963 --> 17:42.049
[SPEAKER_01]: So that's that's really kind of a frightening thought, but I don't know.

17:42.069 --> 17:46.557
[SPEAKER_01]: This one just really kind of sat weird with me in a few different ways, you know.

17:46.717 --> 17:50.503
[SPEAKER_01]: And I think we've all known people like Scott and our life.

17:50.563 --> 17:55.832
[SPEAKER_01]: Someone who just he likes the ladies and the ladies like him, you know, and

17:55.812 --> 18:01.380
[SPEAKER_01]: as much as like from a moral standpoint, I am very much like a serial monogamous.

18:01.440 --> 18:02.421
[SPEAKER_01]: I happen in my whole life.

18:03.042 --> 18:09.551
[SPEAKER_01]: I don't think anyone should ever pay with their life for any kind of infidelity or anything like that.

18:10.432 --> 18:16.080
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, as my wonderful former co-host Olivia used to say, just leave, right?

18:16.280 --> 18:16.741
[SPEAKER_01]: Just leave.

18:16.821 --> 18:17.762
[SPEAKER_01]: It's not working out.

18:18.243 --> 18:24.351
[SPEAKER_01]: If that person cheated on you or stepped

18:24.331 --> 18:35.290
[SPEAKER_01]: So as I was doing the research and everything, I was kind of here in Olivia's voice in my head and just imagine what she would be saying if she was still here recording these episodes with me, but it's that just leave.

18:35.410 --> 18:39.998
[SPEAKER_01]: So, you know, for me personally, this isn't going to fall super high.

18:40.038 --> 18:45.006
[SPEAKER_01]: I would probably put this about a six and the only reason for that is there is that element of

18:45.762 --> 18:54.742
[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, you know, maybe I am stepping out of my relationship, you know, maybe I am seeing other people, but surely the person that I'm going to sleep next to every night.

18:54.782 --> 18:59.773
[SPEAKER_01]: The person that I share my apartment with is not the person who is going to take my life.

19:00.395 --> 19:02.860
[SPEAKER_01]: So there is an an aspect of that.

19:02.840 --> 19:04.323
[SPEAKER_01]: that I find very frightening.

19:05.144 --> 19:08.531
[SPEAKER_01]: But for me, this is going to fall about a six on my Deadpool test.

19:08.731 --> 19:17.007
[SPEAKER_01]: I am not the kind of person who I don't think I would have to worry about my wife every getting upset at me for stepping outside of the mirror just because I'm not wired that way.

19:17.167 --> 19:21.034
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, so when I look at it myself in these shoes,

19:21.487 --> 19:24.551
[SPEAKER_01]: I think this would fall about a six for me, but as always, I want to hear from you.

19:24.591 --> 19:31.239
