[SPEAKER_01]: This is Check The Locks Podcast.
02:07.775 --> 02:12.466
[SPEAKER_01]: Hello, and thank you for joining me as I dive into yet another truly terrifying true crime case.
02:12.566 --> 02:19.864
[SPEAKER_01]: Before we get started, I just hope everyone is doing okay from this massive winter storm that we are all recovering from.
02:19.904 --> 02:25.918
[SPEAKER_01]: I truly apologize for not having an episode for last week, just going to be honest with you the internet.
02:25.898 --> 02:27.821
[SPEAKER_01]: was not the strongest.
02:28.281 --> 02:37.134
[SPEAKER_01]: And then, you know, we just had everybody home kind of on top of each other for the last week, uh, Milly school has been closed, you hadn't been back to school in nine days.
02:37.695 --> 02:38.896
[SPEAKER_01]: Uh, so there's been a lot going on.
02:38.916 --> 02:40.479
[SPEAKER_01]: And I know that we were very lucky.
02:41.080 --> 02:42.081
[SPEAKER_01]: We didn't lose power.
02:42.141 --> 02:43.443
[SPEAKER_01]: Anything of that nature.
02:43.463 --> 02:46.347
[SPEAKER_01]: So we were able to stay warm and the heat kicked on and everything like that.
02:46.427 --> 02:49.612
[SPEAKER_01]: But I know a lot of people weren't as lucky.
02:49.732 --> 02:54.859
[SPEAKER_01]: So I really do hope.
02:54.957 --> 02:59.221
[SPEAKER_01]: you were able to stay warm and everything is back working the way that it should be now.
02:59.701 --> 03:02.344
[SPEAKER_01]: It's just, it was absolutely crazy.
03:02.644 --> 03:04.406
[SPEAKER_01]: I will tell you my Michigan man kicked in.
03:04.786 --> 03:08.650
[SPEAKER_01]: I did have the cleanest driveway out of the entire city in which I live in.
03:09.010 --> 03:15.196
[SPEAKER_01]: I was out there with a shovel, which probably led me to get in the viral funk that you might hear my voice now.
03:15.336 --> 03:21.722
[SPEAKER_01]: So we had the storm and then I was actually on the couch for about three or four days just completely knocked out.
03:21.963 --> 03:22.483
[SPEAKER_01]: So.
03:22.463 --> 03:36.675
[SPEAKER_01]: uh... with all that being said again just hope that you're doing okay hope you're warm uh... if there is any damage or i know there's a lot of down trees and things like that uh... you know hope we're able to get those taken care of and and again just make it sure everybody's safe out there
03:36.925 --> 03:40.070
[SPEAKER_01]: But with that other way, let's go ahead and talk about this week's case.
03:40.451 --> 03:41.132
[SPEAKER_01]: I'll be honest with you.
03:41.252 --> 03:46.841
[SPEAKER_01]: I hadn't heard about this case, and as I was going through the research, I was like, man, I'm really surprised I didn't know anything about this.
03:46.861 --> 03:57.198
[SPEAKER_01]: So I'm kind of wondering if the listeners, a locksmiths are going to have the same reaction, but with that being said, I'm going to go ahead and quit the Gabby Gabby, get into the stabby stabby.
03:57.238 --> 04:01.245
[SPEAKER_01]: Again, hope y'all are staying warm, and let's break down this week's episode.
04:01.225 --> 04:07.280
[SPEAKER_01]: In 2015, 27-year-old Sasha Sam Sudian was living in Uptown Place, Condominiums.
04:07.961 --> 04:13.054
[SPEAKER_01]: Located in Orlando's downtown entertainment district, the building was modern and secure.
04:13.675 --> 04:18.627
[SPEAKER_01]: Equipped with 24-7 surveillance cameras and key codes to every unit.
04:18.927 --> 04:21.629
[SPEAKER_01]: Sasha Sam Sudian was born in New York in 1988.
04:21.749 --> 04:25.953
[SPEAKER_01]: Her family would relocate to Orlando or Sasha would grow up.
04:26.734 --> 04:34.200
[SPEAKER_01]: She would graduate from the University of Florida before taking a job with a real estate company, specializing in Orlando entertainment rentals.
04:35.141 --> 04:37.202
[SPEAKER_01]: The career was a perfect match for Sasha.
04:37.763 --> 04:48.512
[SPEAKER_01]: She was an energetic and outgoing woman who loved making connections, and she considered herself the cupid of apartment hunting,
04:49.184 --> 04:56.414
[SPEAKER_01]: In the early morning hours of October 17, Sasha was out with friends, enjoying a night at Orlando's attic nightclub.
04:57.255 --> 05:03.484
[SPEAKER_01]: She would eventually leave for the evening and head home, planning to get breakfast with her friend, Anthony Roper, and the morning.
05:04.345 --> 05:06.788
[SPEAKER_01]: But when the time came, Sasha never showed.
05:07.950 --> 05:10.974
[SPEAKER_01]: Anthony called and texted, but Sasha didn't respond.
05:11.835 --> 05:17.503
[SPEAKER_01]: He even tried to reach her through social media, which Sasha used frequently, but still,
05:18.277 --> 05:25.410
[SPEAKER_01]: Anthony's concern only grew, so later that day he and two other friends drove to the Uptown Place condominiums.
05:26.572 --> 05:32.422
[SPEAKER_01]: They found Sasha's car in the parking lot, but they're worried grew when they noticed a present sitting in the back seat.
05:33.524 --> 05:39.795
[SPEAKER_01]: Sasha was supposed to have gone to a baby shower that day, and the present in the car meant she never attended the party.
05:40.214 --> 05:44.598
[SPEAKER_01]: The concerned group entered the building and knocked on her door, but Sasha didn't answer.
05:45.399 --> 05:52.246
[SPEAKER_01]: Later that evening there were still no response, so Anthony decided to call the police, requesting a welfare check to be done.
05:53.026 --> 05:55.589
[SPEAKER_01]: Police arrived at Sasha's condo and made entry.
05:56.189 --> 06:00.614
[SPEAKER_01]: The strong smell of bleach was the first thing that the officer's noticed.
06:00.634 --> 06:07.420
[SPEAKER_01]: As they made their way through the unit, they arrived at the bedroom, and it was there
06:07.602 --> 06:10.787
[SPEAKER_01]: lying in her bed was the body of Sasha Samsonian.
06:11.488 --> 06:14.112
[SPEAKER_01]: She was partially clothed and wrapped in her comforter.
06:14.813 --> 06:18.519
[SPEAKER_01]: Her shirt and bra had been ripped away and her pants and underwear were missing.
06:19.480 --> 06:22.044
[SPEAKER_01]: It would later be determined that Sasha had been strangled.
06:23.006 --> 06:33.542
[SPEAKER_01]: The medical examiner would also find signs of blunt force trauma to her head, as well as upper and lower body abrasions, indicating that the 27-year-old had been forcefully restrained.
06:34.298 --> 06:42.468
[SPEAKER_01]: It appeared that whoever had murdered Sasha had tried to use bleach to wipe away any evidence, but investigators noticed some other strange clues.
06:43.489 --> 06:49.136
[SPEAKER_01]: First of all, the toilets he was up, which detectives found odd as Sasha was a single woman living alone.
06:49.917 --> 06:52.640
[SPEAKER_01]: This indicated that a man may have been inside the apartment.
06:53.661 --> 07:00.930
[SPEAKER_01]: The toilet was dusted and fingerprints were found underneath the lid.
07:01.754 --> 07:08.246
[SPEAKER_01]: Investigators were also able to find a partial shoe print inside the home, and they found that Sasha's phone and keys were missing.
07:09.368 --> 07:15.679
[SPEAKER_01]: Additionally, swabs were done on the victim's neck and body, revealing the presence of foreign DNA.
07:15.912 --> 07:22.841
[SPEAKER_01]: Now, police initially questioned Anthony Roper and he shared with investigators that he had been out with Sasha the night that she died.
07:23.422 --> 07:32.655
[SPEAKER_01]: But she had left the attic nightclub at around 12.30 a.m. Detectives wanted to access the condominium security footage, but the videos were not available at the time.
07:33.355 --> 07:38.062
[SPEAKER_01]: So they decided to speak with a security guard who was on duty the night that Sasha was murdered.
07:38.743 --> 07:40.485
[SPEAKER_01]: Stephen Ducksbury.
07:40.465 --> 07:50.720
[SPEAKER_01]: Now, according to Ducksbury, Sasha had arrived home with two other women, but she was unable to produce an ID or keycard, so he was not able to let her inside the building.
07:51.881 --> 07:57.209
[SPEAKER_01]: Ducksbury then said that he had witnessed Sasha enter the building behind another resident who had keyed in.
07:58.290 --> 08:02.416
[SPEAKER_01]: According to the security guard, he ended his shift and left at 6am that morning.
08:03.598 --> 08:07.924
[SPEAKER_01]: Investigators were able to track down the two women who were with Sasha that night.
08:08.174 --> 08:12.959
[SPEAKER_01]: They told detectives that they had seen Sam Soudian walking down the street from inside of a neighbor.
08:13.620 --> 08:16.763
[SPEAKER_01]: She was obviously intoxicated so they offered her a ride home.
08:17.925 --> 08:23.371
[SPEAKER_01]: When they arrived, they waited for her to enter the building and then left, assuming that she was safe at home.
08:24.412 --> 08:28.997
[SPEAKER_01]: Investigators were also able to identify the man that Sasha had followed inside the building.
08:29.798 --> 08:36.325
[SPEAKER_01]: He was willing to provide a DNA sample and was ultimately cleared, but he shared that Sasha appeared pretty drunk.
08:36.828 --> 08:44.438
[SPEAKER_01]: and just as the case seemed to be approaching a dead end, detectives finally got a solid lead when an upstairs neighbor came forward.
08:45.539 --> 08:49.204
[SPEAKER_01]: They claimed to have seen Sasha Sam Sudian on the night that she was killed.
08:50.025 --> 08:55.352
[SPEAKER_01]: The neighbor said that she was walking down the hallway, and she was being followed by Stephen Ducksbury.
08:56.333 --> 09:03.983
[SPEAKER_01]: Investigators were finally able to view the CCTV footage, and what they witnessed contradicted the security guards claim.
09:04.435 --> 09:09.441
[SPEAKER_01]: In the video, Sasha could be seen wandering the exterior floors and stairways of the building.
09:10.242 --> 09:14.707
[SPEAKER_01]: Trailing behind her, and sometimes walking with her, was Stephen Ducksbury.
09:15.508 --> 09:18.532
[SPEAKER_01]: Stalking Sasha for nearly 40 minutes.
09:18.552 --> 09:27.743
[SPEAKER_01]: Using his own key card to enter locked doors as he followed, seemingly aware of the fact that security cameras didn't cover some of the common areas of the building.
09:28.786 --> 09:32.497
[SPEAKER_01]: at 6.36 a.m. Ducksbury was seen on camera again.
09:32.557 --> 09:40.180
[SPEAKER_01]: This time he was holding two white trash bags with red drawstring handles and still in his uniform.
09:40.649 --> 09:48.579
[SPEAKER_01]: He walked through a doorway leading to the second floor garage where his car was parked, and when he returned, the trash bags were nowhere to be found.
09:49.300 --> 09:52.024
[SPEAKER_01]: Now, a few things about this stood out to detectives.
09:52.645 --> 09:57.171
[SPEAKER_01]: First, trash disposal was not one of the security guards' responsibilities.
09:58.032 --> 10:03.619
[SPEAKER_01]: Second, the video clearly contradicted Ducksbury's claim that he had left at 6am.
10:03.785 --> 10:08.614
[SPEAKER_01]: And when investigators searched Sasha's apartment, they found that exact type of trash bag.
10:09.496 --> 10:16.329
[SPEAKER_01]: Stephen Ducksbury was now the prime suspect in Sam Soudian's murder, but detectives would need more evidence.
10:16.349 --> 10:19.735
[SPEAKER_01]: So they obtained a search warrant for both his home and his phone.
10:20.491 --> 10:30.068
[SPEAKER_01]: They found that on October 17th at around 5am, Duxbury used his phone's browser to find information on how to override a quick set digital lock.
10:30.969 --> 10:34.415
[SPEAKER_01]: This is the same type of lock that Sasha had on her unit door.
10:35.137 --> 10:41.588
[SPEAKER_01]: Now this was at the same time that the security guard was absent from the footage for roughly 90 minutes.
10:41.804 --> 10:47.151
[SPEAKER_01]: Detectives also learned that Ducksbury had provided his fingerprints to his employer when he was hired.
10:47.771 --> 10:52.798
[SPEAKER_01]: And when comparing them to the print found on the toilet seat nightstand, they matched perfectly.
10:53.699 --> 10:59.185
[SPEAKER_01]: Additionally, the souls of Ducksbury shoes matched the partial print found inside the apartment.
10:59.946 --> 11:03.711
[SPEAKER_01]: But the most damning evidence of all would be the DNA.
11:04.012 --> 11:10.624
[SPEAKER_01]: A sample from Ducksbury was run against the sample found on Sasha's breast, and again, it was a perfect match.
11:11.245 --> 11:25.210
[SPEAKER_01]: But the security guard continued to claim that he was innocent, telling investigators that he never entered Sasha's apartment, even offering to take a polygraph, a test that he would ultimately fail, with his answers reading his dishonest.
11:25.544 --> 11:33.952
[SPEAKER_01]: On October 30, 2015, Stephen Ducksbury was arrested and charged with first-degree murder, attempted sexual battery and burglary.
11:34.593 --> 11:39.198
[SPEAKER_01]: The trial would take place in November of 2017 and would last for only six days.
11:39.978 --> 11:43.362
[SPEAKER_01]: During which, the prosecution painted their theory for the jury.
11:44.063 --> 11:49.168
[SPEAKER_01]: They argued that Sasha Sam Sudian entered her apartment, crawled into bed, and fell asleep.
11:49.828 --> 11:55.534
[SPEAKER_01]: And it was then that Stephen Ducksbury was able to override the quickset lock and enter
11:55.514 --> 11:59.061
[SPEAKER_01]: before attempting to sexually assault Sasha and strangling her.
11:59.743 --> 12:03.491
[SPEAKER_01]: When he was finished, he attempted to wipe the evidence away using bleach.
12:04.754 --> 12:11.147
[SPEAKER_01]: Now, the defense argued that the evidence was mostly circumstantial, but in the end, the jury sided with a prosecution.
12:11.869 --> 12:16.358
[SPEAKER_01]: Finding Stephen Ducksbury guilty and sentencing him to life in prison.
12:16.422 --> 12:23.237
[SPEAKER_01]: But for Sasha's parents, Tara and Ken Samsoodian, this was only the beginning of accountability for their daughter's murder.
12:23.999 --> 12:29.892
[SPEAKER_01]: And the couple would file a lawsuit against both the condominium complex and the security company.
12:30.445 --> 12:33.731
[SPEAKER_01]: Stephen Ducksbury had been hired by Vital Security in 2015.
12:34.953 --> 12:40.985
[SPEAKER_01]: And while he passed the necessary background checks, he soon became the subject of several complaints from residents.
12:41.786 --> 12:53.348
[SPEAKER_01]: In fact, in May of 2015, just months before Sasha's death, a young female tenant claim that Ducksbury had followed her back to her apartment, saying that he was, quote, acting sketchy.
12:54.526 --> 12:59.996
[SPEAKER_01]: For the same pseudians, Steven Ducksberry was their daughter's killer, but the warning signs have been missed.
13:00.857 --> 13:05.586
[SPEAKER_01]: And though they will never truly recover from losing their daughter, they have worked to help others.
13:06.247 --> 13:10.054
[SPEAKER_01]: Speaking at the National Crime Victims Rights Week in 2018,
13:25.137 --> 13:40.648
[SPEAKER_01]: So that's this week's case, and as always, I wanted to share some final thoughts before I jumped into the Debel test, but as I had mentioned in the beginning of this episode, I was not familiar with Sasha's case before, and as I was going through, I kind of felt my heart aching a little bit.
13:40.628 --> 13:42.070
[SPEAKER_01]: you know, it's this young woman.
13:42.090 --> 13:44.213
[SPEAKER_01]: She's not even 30 years old yet.
13:44.393 --> 13:45.755
[SPEAKER_01]: She's graduated from college.
13:45.795 --> 13:47.076
[SPEAKER_01]: She's carving out a career.
13:47.136 --> 13:50.601
[SPEAKER_01]: She's doing well at what she does and earning a reputation.
13:50.681 --> 13:53.164
[SPEAKER_01]: And she's out with friends having a good time.
13:53.705 --> 13:55.627
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, she's just enjoying her life.
13:55.707 --> 14:03.497
[SPEAKER_01]: And she's in that part of your life where you're excited about the future and you're building those things for what your life is going to look like.
14:03.629 --> 14:22.026
[SPEAKER_01]: and you go out and you have a couple of drinks and come home, lock the door, crawl into bed and you go to sleep, just thinking that everything is okay and you have no idea that the person who is paid to protect you is the person who is decided they're going to get what they want even if that means you lose your life.
14:22.006 --> 14:24.910
[SPEAKER_01]: and there's something absolutely terrifying about that to me.
14:24.950 --> 14:31.580
[SPEAKER_01]: I talked about it before on the podcast before, but home invasion is that's just the thing that kind of gets under my skin.
14:32.421 --> 14:34.544
[SPEAKER_01]: Your home is supposed to be your sanctuary.
14:34.564 --> 14:41.955
[SPEAKER_01]: It's supposed to be where you feel the safest and you can fully relax and feel comfortable.
14:42.222 --> 14:46.529
[SPEAKER_01]: and, you know, in Sasha's case, she's got the digital locks, right?
14:46.569 --> 14:55.503
[SPEAKER_01]: She's paying for a condominium with security, like this is 24-7 video recording and this should be a safe place.
14:56.144 --> 15:00.231
[SPEAKER_01]: And it just goes to show that if somebody really wants to hurt you,
15:00.211 --> 15:02.735
[SPEAKER_01]: they're going to figure out how to do it, you know.
15:03.115 --> 15:18.997
[SPEAKER_01]: So this one, like I said, it just, it really made my heart hurt as I was going through it and, you know, kind of thinking about this as Sasha's parents, you know, myself being a husband, being a father, like I know one day my daughter is going to grow up and she's going to strike out on her own.
15:19.698 --> 15:29.492
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, she's going to have her own apartment the same way that I have my own apartment and the same way that, you know,
15:31.379 --> 15:36.024
[SPEAKER_01]: These are things I think that are going to pop into my head when these big moments happen.
15:36.064 --> 15:49.078
[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know if that is a curse or if it's going to allow me to have some harder conversations with it because I spend my time researching these cases and then talking about them on the spotcast.
15:49.879 --> 15:56.847
[SPEAKER_01]: I can't imagine the hurt that they must have been going through and the way that their world must have shattered.
15:56.827 --> 16:03.594
[SPEAKER_01]: And I think they are 110% totally within their rights to file that lawsuit.
16:03.614 --> 16:08.680
[SPEAKER_01]: And I will tell you, I did look to see if I could find any outcome on that lawsuit.
16:08.700 --> 16:09.761
[SPEAKER_01]: I haven't been able to find it.
16:09.981 --> 16:25.078
[SPEAKER_01]: If you know you know anything about this case or you're in you know, or the Orlando area and you're familiar with this and you know how I paned out, please reach out because I would love to know, you know, if it ended out working out in their favor.
16:25.345 --> 16:28.950
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, especially, even if this guy passed the background checks, right?
16:29.050 --> 16:41.066
[SPEAKER_01]: Ducksberry was able to pass the background, this company hired him as soon as those complaints start coming in, they are guilty of not acting on that, you know, and not investigating it.
16:41.146 --> 16:52.281
[SPEAKER_01]: And because they did not look in a Ducksberry months before Sasha lost her life, unfortunately, these tragic events unfolded.
16:52.750 --> 16:57.017
[SPEAKER_01]: So it just seems like a failure of the security company.
16:57.598 --> 17:00.403
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, there's not security cameras everywhere.
17:00.423 --> 17:03.007
[SPEAKER_01]: There should be in the condominium complex.
17:03.027 --> 17:04.349
[SPEAKER_01]: So it seems like a failure there.
17:04.389 --> 17:08.737
[SPEAKER_01]: And you know, all of this led to Sasha losing her life.
17:09.057 --> 17:10.460
[SPEAKER_01]: And it's, it just sucks.
17:10.680 --> 17:12.984
[SPEAKER_01]: It's sad and it was hard to go through.
17:13.385 --> 17:14.286
[SPEAKER_01]: So.
17:14.266 --> 17:31.549
[SPEAKER_01]: For me, again, you know, just thinking about this student lens of what if this was my child or my wife or, you know, we've all say to Airbnb's and, you know, have traveled and I know, you know, there's all sorts of hack videos on how to make sure, you know, knowing can break into your hotel door and all that stuff like.
17:31.968 --> 17:38.921
[SPEAKER_01]: We've all been outside of our our natural comfort zone and maybe had experience with this and and again for Sasha she was home.
17:38.961 --> 17:41.927
[SPEAKER_01]: This was her her place that she shouldn't have to worry about this.
17:42.007 --> 17:48.720
[SPEAKER_01]: So when I think about it through the lens of a parent and losing someone you love and a place that they should be safe for me.
17:48.760 --> 17:51.726
[SPEAKER_01]: This is definitely going to be a 10 across the board.
17:52.026 --> 17:54.972
[SPEAKER_01]: But as always, I want to hear from you the listeners, the locksmith.
