[SPEAKER_01]: Join me, John Connor, as we discuss the murder of Crystal Kenny.
02:09.293 --> 02:14.320
[SPEAKER_01]: Hello, and thank you for joining me as we dive in to get another truly terrifying true crime case.
02:14.621 --> 02:20.510
[SPEAKER_01]: Before we get started, I just wanted to take a moment and say, I hope everyone's holiday was amazing.
02:20.870 --> 02:22.292
[SPEAKER_01]: I hope that you got to spend yours.
02:22.332 --> 02:26.939
[SPEAKER_01]: Like, I got to spend mine surrounded by friends and family and people that I love.
02:27.340 --> 02:29.984
[SPEAKER_01]: And eating way too much good food.
02:30.124 --> 02:35.672
[SPEAKER_01]: So I always get a little overboard around the holidays because we got the pizza bombs.
02:35.712 --> 02:36.754
[SPEAKER_01]: We got the taco dip.
02:36.774 --> 02:38.997
[SPEAKER_01]: So we got all sorts of stuff.
02:38.977 --> 02:41.620
[SPEAKER_01]: but find myself being a little bit of a glutton this time of year.
02:41.781 --> 02:44.764
[SPEAKER_01]: But that's all right, 2026 is coming.
02:44.784 --> 02:51.473
[SPEAKER_01]: We're gonna work it off, you know, kind of put all that glutton that's eaten behind us and start fresh with the brand new year.
02:51.693 --> 02:58.101
[SPEAKER_01]: But all that to say, I really do hope that it was a great holiday for you and that you got to experience that same kind of joy.
02:58.121 --> 03:03.448
[SPEAKER_01]: I know this is a time of year where the kids are off of school and they're home a little bit more.
03:03.428 --> 03:05.670
[SPEAKER_01]: you're just getting that time to spend with everybody.
03:05.731 --> 03:08.153
[SPEAKER_01]: So again, just hope it was a wonderful holiday.
03:08.694 --> 03:09.495
[SPEAKER_01]: Super excited.
03:09.555 --> 03:13.119
[SPEAKER_01]: This is our last episode before we go into 2026.
03:13.759 --> 03:16.422
[SPEAKER_01]: So we got a whole new year starting.
03:16.923 --> 03:19.446
[SPEAKER_01]: It's going to be a great year for us here at Check The Locks.
03:19.826 --> 03:22.609
[SPEAKER_01]: I know it's going to be a great year for our family out there.
03:22.669 --> 03:23.811
[SPEAKER_01]: Listeners are locksmiths.
03:24.151 --> 03:26.734
[SPEAKER_01]: And I am really excited to see what this new year brings.
03:27.114 --> 03:30.738
[SPEAKER_01]: And even more excited to have you as part of that trip with us.
03:30.838 --> 03:32.220
[SPEAKER_01]: So again,
03:32.200 --> 03:59.322
[SPEAKER_01]: just super happy to be here super looking forward to next year and really it's a double edged sword with this week's case i'm excited to get into it but i do have to tell you it's uh it's a little bit of a hard one this one like last week it will be a little bit shorter just because again i know that the kids are home people are traveling uh family is in town stuff at that so you may not have the ability to just put on your favorite murder podcast right uh so i wanted to give
03:59.470 --> 04:05.155
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, maybe a little bit shorter step outside, take a little break, have some time to go through it, digest it and things like that.
04:05.315 --> 04:10.019
[SPEAKER_01]: But I will tell you, this is one of those cases is going to make you want to hug your kids a little bit closer.
04:10.080 --> 04:23.051
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, just if you're anything like me, it made me feel grateful for the home dynamic that that I live in and it just it does it makes your heart go out to the people in the story that we're going to cover.
04:23.131 --> 04:29.477
[SPEAKER_01]: So with all that out of the way, let's just go ahead and jump into this week's case.
04:29.457 --> 04:41.412
[SPEAKER_01]: So sadly, this case actually took place just a couple of days ago, and on December 22nd, shortly before 11 p.m., 9-1-1 dispatchers in Polk County, Florida received a disturbing call.
04:42.373 --> 04:47.420
[SPEAKER_01]: A 12-year-old boy had run to his neighbor's home because his parents were in the middle of a heated argument.
04:48.121 --> 04:52.326
[SPEAKER_01]: And while running next door, the child had heard a single gunshot.
04:52.306 --> 04:59.436
[SPEAKER_01]: Deputies were dispatched and arrived to the house within five minutes, and when they entered, they discovered the body of Crystal Kenny.
04:59.937 --> 05:02.640
[SPEAKER_01]: She had been fatally shot in the head and was pronounced dead.
05:03.562 --> 05:08.408
[SPEAKER_01]: As deputies continued to search the home, they found Crystal's 13-year-old daughter in a bedroom.
05:09.190 --> 05:13.556
[SPEAKER_01]: The teenager had been shot twice, once in the shoulder and once in the face.
05:14.337 --> 05:20.305
[SPEAKER_01]: The girl was badly injured, but she was alive, and she was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.
05:20.977 --> 05:29.330
[SPEAKER_01]: It would later be learned that the bullet that had struck the girl in the face had hit the bridge of her nose, causing it to go straight up and exit through the top of her head.
05:30.292 --> 05:37.243
[SPEAKER_01]: As deputies continued to search the home, they found crystals one-year-old daughter sleeping quietly in her crib, thankfully unharmed.
05:38.064 --> 05:42.812
[SPEAKER_01]: But there was no sign of Crystal's husband, 47-year-old Jason Kenny.
05:43.653 --> 05:46.798
[SPEAKER_01]: He had fled the scene before deputies arrived.
05:46.930 --> 05:55.362
[SPEAKER_01]: Investigators now have the task of not only finding their suspected shooter, but determining what had sparked the evening's violent events.
05:55.382 --> 05:58.567
[SPEAKER_01]: Deputy's learned that earlier in the night the family had been together.
05:59.328 --> 06:07.259
[SPEAKER_01]: Jason Kenney was a San Francisco 49ers fan, and he had been watching his favorite team take on the Indianapolis Colts and a shed outside.
06:07.960 --> 06:13.528
[SPEAKER_01]: Near the end, Jason had gone inside to finish watching the game, joining Crystal in the living room.
06:13.711 --> 06:17.716
[SPEAKER_01]: but she was not interested in the football game and suggested that they watched something else.
06:18.998 --> 06:25.166
[SPEAKER_01]: Jason had been drinking and did not take the suggestion well, leading to a heated argument between the couple.
06:26.047 --> 06:31.895
[SPEAKER_01]: As the argument continued to escalate, Crystal told her son to run to the neighbor's home to call 911.
06:32.676 --> 06:35.500
[SPEAKER_01]: And that is when Jason Kennedy began firing.
06:36.222 --> 06:41.848
[SPEAKER_01]: Detectors would later be able to speak to Crystal's daughter, who shared what she remembered of the tragic events.
06:42.569 --> 06:49.476
[SPEAKER_01]: Telling investigators, I begged him, don't shoot me, don't shoot me, don't shoot me, and he shot me anyway.
06:50.797 --> 06:53.060
[SPEAKER_01]: When it was over, Kenny fled the scene.
06:53.921 --> 06:57.545
[SPEAKER_01]: And while running in the car, he called a sister in upstate New York.
06:57.965 --> 07:02.770
[SPEAKER_01]: Telling her, I've done something very, very bad, very bad.
07:03.037 --> 07:03.758
[SPEAKER_01]: he continued.
07:04.559 --> 07:06.501
[SPEAKER_01]: This is the last time you'll ever talk to me.
07:07.102 --> 07:09.665
[SPEAKER_01]: You'll see me on the news, but I'm not going to jail.
07:10.306 --> 07:12.469
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm not going to jail for the rest of my life.
07:13.390 --> 07:25.806
[SPEAKER_01]: Deputies were able to track Jason Kenney to his recently deceased father's home, where he had barricaded himself inside of his shed on the property, and his officers surrounded the small outbuilding they heard a single gunshot.
07:26.747 --> 07:31.373
[SPEAKER_01]: Jason Kenney had taken his own life,
07:32.551 --> 07:37.661
[SPEAKER_01]: Back at the family's home, investigators continued to look for insights into what had happened that evening.
07:38.362 --> 07:46.017
[SPEAKER_01]: And while searching, they found an undated note from Crystal to her husband, which read, you know you're drinking, you're using cocaine again.
07:46.077 --> 07:48.682
[SPEAKER_01]: This is not the way family should be.
07:49.344 --> 07:50.526
[SPEAKER_01]: You need God.
07:51.383 --> 07:56.953
[SPEAKER_01]: While the note may have provided a glimpse into the couple's dynamic, there was no way to tell when it was written.
07:57.714 --> 08:01.601
[SPEAKER_01]: But according to Crystal's family, she was a regular victim of domestic abuse.
08:02.042 --> 08:07.251
[SPEAKER_01]: She had just never reported it to the police, opting to confide in those close to her instead.
08:08.073 --> 08:15.045
[SPEAKER_01]: And while the three children are now in the care of their maternal grandparents, the trauma that they have experienced will definitely endure.
08:15.633 --> 08:25.488
[SPEAKER_01]: with Sheriff Grady Judd saying, three days before Christmas, this man shot and killed his wife, shot a stepdaughter, and then shot and killed himself.
08:26.349 --> 08:33.620
[SPEAKER_01]: This is horrific, but destroying a family and the mental health of these children so close to Christmas is especially horrific.
08:34.261 --> 08:38.367
[SPEAKER_01]: We will do everything we can to help this family get through this difficult time.
08:39.528 --> 08:46.996
[SPEAKER_01]: Now that's this week's case, but as a reminder, if you or someone you know is experiencing domestic violence, there is help.
08:47.016 --> 08:51.081
[SPEAKER_01]: You can call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-7233.
08:53.643 --> 09:08.860
[SPEAKER_01]: Again, that's 1-800-799-7233 or TechSstart START-T-8788.
09:08.840 --> 09:12.265
[SPEAKER_01]: So I just wanted to take a few minutes to share some final thoughts on this case.
09:12.425 --> 09:18.894
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, I'm recording this on a Monday, which means that this story actually took place seven days ago.
09:19.795 --> 09:23.761
[SPEAKER_01]: So eight days ago, there was a family that was together getting ready for Christmas.
09:24.382 --> 09:26.244
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, these kids are probably super excited.
09:26.344 --> 09:35.377
[SPEAKER_01]: I know at my house and a lot of people that I know, you know, especially for 12-year-old 13-year-old, you know, these are kids who were excited, right?
09:35.417 --> 09:36.539
[SPEAKER_01]: They're excited for Christmas.
09:36.599 --> 09:37.480
[SPEAKER_01]: They're
09:37.713 --> 09:40.696
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, they're, they've got their, they're wishless together.
09:40.736 --> 09:42.418
[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe you're an elf on the shelf family.
09:42.478 --> 09:45.121
[SPEAKER_01]: And, you know, the elf has been doing fun stuff.
09:45.201 --> 09:48.365
[SPEAKER_01]: And, you know, you're, you're waiting for that Christmas magic.
09:48.385 --> 09:48.966
[SPEAKER_01]: It's a child.
09:49.706 --> 09:59.577
[SPEAKER_01]: And to think that this holiday has now been forever tarnished by the actions of one man is absolutely terrifying.
09:59.597 --> 10:03.822
[SPEAKER_01]: Like for the rest of their lives, these kids will associate Christmas with losing their mother.
10:04.747 --> 10:11.094
[SPEAKER_01]: And to think that one person could do that and take that joy away and break a family that way.
10:11.715 --> 10:13.537
[SPEAKER_01]: So close to Christmas is just heartbreaking.
10:13.677 --> 10:16.080
[SPEAKER_01]: So this was a hard one for me to get through.
10:16.120 --> 10:23.288
[SPEAKER_01]: And I will go ahead and fully acknowledge that what I'm about to say next, you could probably copy and paste from a different episode of this podcast and drop it right here.
10:23.869 --> 10:26.932
[SPEAKER_01]: But it's just because it's the truth as a father.
10:26.972 --> 10:31.918
[SPEAKER_01]: This case disgusted me in a way that's hard to put in the words.
10:31.898 --> 10:45.617
[SPEAKER_01]: like as a dad it is my job to be there to protect you and to support you and to show you love and to care for you and to help you grow and be that safe place in the storm for you.
10:46.177 --> 10:54.649
[SPEAKER_01]: And so to think that there is somebody out there who can not only turn on his wife and
10:54.798 --> 10:55.840
[SPEAKER_01]: on your child.
10:56.361 --> 11:08.220
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, even if it is your stepdaughter, that's still your daughter, your responsible for making sure that that child is emotionally taken care of, physically taken care of.
11:08.260 --> 11:16.553
[SPEAKER_01]: And to be the kind of monster that could turn the barrel of a gun and pull the trigger on a 13-year-old child, who is begging me, don't shoot me.
11:17.883 --> 11:25.293
[SPEAKER_01]: like you know I'll go ahead and say it I one of the the downers of the story definitely wasn't the fact that he took his own life for me.
11:26.335 --> 11:35.888
[SPEAKER_01]: Would I have like to see Jason Kenny face justice for what he did and have to go in front of Jerry absolutely but at the end of the day he can't hurt anybody else.
11:36.569 --> 11:37.630
[SPEAKER_01]: So
11:37.762 --> 11:49.364
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, this is one that it was really hard because I think about all of the joy that that my child gets from from Christmas and all of the things that she, you know, expects for me without knowing.
11:50.847 --> 11:56.698
[SPEAKER_01]: And to think that there's just somebody out there who could just blatantly be so evil and violent.
11:57.505 --> 11:58.826
[SPEAKER_01]: it's it's scary.
11:59.207 --> 12:06.694
[SPEAKER_01]: So for me, I'm going to put this out of nine just because again, I could never see myself.
12:06.754 --> 12:08.736
[SPEAKER_01]: This is not me as a person, right?
12:08.856 --> 12:13.540
[SPEAKER_01]: But the fact that there are people out there like this is absolutely terrifying.
12:13.580 --> 12:24.711
[SPEAKER_01]: And I think when we talk about monsters walking amongst us, this is definitely one of those cases, and especially according to Crystal's family, you know, like this has been
12:25.130 --> 12:29.314
[SPEAKER_01]: This kind of event isn't something that just happens one day out of nowhere, right?
12:29.674 --> 12:52.757
[SPEAKER_01]: There have been escalating issues, escalating issues to me and again, this is just speculation, but to me with her family saying that she had been a victim of domestic abuse and then her instinct being, let me tell my son to run and call 911 and thank God that 12-year-old boy
12:54.475 --> 13:15.488
[SPEAKER_01]: I, you know, had that boy not gone to call 911, I don't know what would have happened if we would have been reading another sad detail of this story, but the fact that Crystal's intuition or her instinct was you need to run and call 911 to me that that says, hey, I've been in the situation before I know it's about to escalate, we've got to have someone intervene.
13:16.244 --> 13:24.264
[SPEAKER_01]: So, you know, I'm typically a man doesn't just pull out a gun and start shooting his family whenever there's a first altercation.
13:24.405 --> 13:27.773
[SPEAKER_01]: To me, this is something has been building bubbling.
13:27.871 --> 13:32.416
[SPEAKER_01]: And again, he's just a specific kind of evil, you know.
13:32.936 --> 13:39.744
[SPEAKER_01]: So for me, I'm going to put this out of nine, but as always, I want to hear from you, the listeners, the locksmiths, let me know what you think.

14:55.452 --> 14:56.753
[SPEAKER_01]: Hey, have you heard about the show?
14:56.853 --> 14:57.294
[SPEAKER_01]: Check it out.
14:57.334 --> 14:58.235
[SPEAKER_01]: Here's a link, right?
14:58.876 --> 15:03.561
[SPEAKER_01]: And by you telling other people that bring us more members into our family and into our community.
15:03.601 --> 15:07.925
[SPEAKER_01]: So if you're sharing this in any way, just know that I appreciate you more than I could ever tell you.
15:08.606 --> 15:10.328
[SPEAKER_01]: That's all I've got for you for this week's case.
15:10.368 --> 15:11.929
[SPEAKER_01]: But please make sure that you're subscribed.
15:12.070 --> 15:15.253
[SPEAKER_01]: Check the locks in your favorite podcast apps so that you never miss an episode.
15:15.693 --> 15:19.117
[SPEAKER_01]: I will see you again next week with another truly terrifying true-prime case.
15:19.457 --> 15:22.200
[SPEAKER_01]: But until then, remember, monsters are real.
15:22.661 --> 15:23.822
[SPEAKER_01]: So stay safe.
15:23.802 --> 15:26.943
[SPEAKER_01]: Stay ready and don't forget to check the lot.
15:27.526 --> 15:28.412
[SPEAKER_01]: See you next week.
