00:47.728 --> 01:12.080
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm John Connor saying thank you for joining us this week is we dive into yet another truly terrifying true crime case So funny thing You may notice that this is a John only episode again this week I know Olivia was supposed to be back with us, but I swear the universe works in some crazy ways Olivia actually had to go into work on the night that she normally does not work and Unfortunately, you know with what she does for a living

01:12.640 --> 01:15.562
[SPEAKER_01]: little hard to record a podcast while you are working.

01:15.982 --> 01:24.487
[SPEAKER_01]: So this is going to be a John only episode, but there's a few different things going on this episode outside of some of the stuff that we normally do.

01:25.836 --> 01:33.143
[SPEAKER_01]: A couple of weeks ago are about a month ago or maybe more in that out of no time, uh, escape me a lot of the time, but we did a Facebook lot.

01:33.624 --> 01:38.929
[SPEAKER_01]: And one of the things that we heard is that people actually really like the two part episodes in the multi-part episode.

01:39.410 --> 01:42.253
[SPEAKER_01]: So the great news is that's exactly what I have for you this week.

01:42.573 --> 01:44.195
[SPEAKER_01]: It's going to be a two-parter.

01:44.575 --> 01:49.120
[SPEAKER_01]: So even though Olivia is not here with us today, she will be back with us on Thursday.

01:49.640 --> 01:55.485
[SPEAKER_01]: we will break down the thoughts, kind of recap this episode and then jump into the second part.

01:55.645 --> 01:58.628
[SPEAKER_01]: So again, really appreciate you hanging out with me.

01:58.748 --> 02:04.072
[SPEAKER_01]: I know there's been a lot of solo episodes on this end this month.

02:04.092 --> 02:09.237
[SPEAKER_01]: I know some of you are probably like, geez, can we get somebody in there?

02:09.577 --> 02:11.839
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm sure you're kind of sick of just hearing me by myself.

02:11.899 --> 02:15.782
[SPEAKER_01]: But if you are listening, I really do appreciate you rocking it out with me.

02:16.763 --> 02:23.847
[SPEAKER_01]: If you know anything about me, if you've been listening to this podcast for a long enough, you know that I hate missing episodes if we don't have to, and also I just love doing this podcast.

02:23.907 --> 02:31.051
[SPEAKER_01]: I love putting out content for the people who listen and, you know, want to make sure that we're putting out absolutely as much as we can.

02:31.111 --> 02:44.779
[SPEAKER_01]: So please just know that we appreciate just so much for sticking with us and kind of riding through this weird time, you know, this is the first time in Jesus, the over three years we've been doing this podcast,

02:45.719 --> 02:49.548
[SPEAKER_01]: There has been these kind of scheduling things coming up, but like I said, we're making it work.

02:49.688 --> 02:50.630
[SPEAKER_01]: Absolutely the best we can.

02:50.691 --> 02:52.054
[SPEAKER_01]: So thank you for hanging in there with me.

02:52.739 --> 02:56.601
[SPEAKER_01]: Also, I have to say you guys, I am super looking forward to covering this week's case.

02:57.441 --> 03:01.924
[SPEAKER_01]: This actually took place in my home state and I was not familiar with it in the slightest.

03:02.024 --> 03:05.586
[SPEAKER_01]: So as I was going through, I was like, how did I not know about this case?

03:05.686 --> 03:08.727
[SPEAKER_01]: So we'll go ahead and jump on into it here in just a moment.

03:08.747 --> 03:11.289
[SPEAKER_01]: But again, if you're listening, just hope you're having a great week.

03:11.369 --> 03:13.470
[SPEAKER_01]: Hope everyone is doing well, staying healthy.

03:14.030 --> 03:16.411
[SPEAKER_01]: And not a whole lot of time for the Gabby Gabby.

03:16.431 --> 03:17.612
[SPEAKER_01]: So we'll get to the stabby stabby.

03:17.632 --> 03:18.893
[SPEAKER_01]: Let's go ahead and break it all in down.

03:19.573 --> 03:22.415
[SPEAKER_01]: For this week's case, we're headed to New Ego, Michigan.

03:23.116 --> 03:27.359
[SPEAKER_01]: Now, New Ego is a small town on the west side of the state north of Grand Rapids.

03:28.080 --> 03:31.042
[SPEAKER_01]: It's a close-knit community known for its 234 lakes and 356 miles of river.

03:31.062 --> 03:32.704
[SPEAKER_01]: It's also home to over 100,000 acres of natural forest.

03:40.167 --> 03:44.310
[SPEAKER_01]: On July 17, 1989, Bob Citer's was leaving home.

03:44.971 --> 03:49.814
[SPEAKER_01]: Heading to his graveyard shift at the Pepsi Colour bottling plant at around 1030 p.m.

03:50.695 --> 03:53.037
[SPEAKER_01]: But before he left, he said goodbye to his daughter.

03:53.057 --> 03:55.178
[SPEAKER_01]: 18-year-old Shannon.

03:55.959 --> 03:58.901
[SPEAKER_01]: Shannon Marie Citer's was born on March 31, 1971.

04:00.983 --> 04:06.326
[SPEAKER_01]: Her parents had divorced 14 years prior and Shannon had grown up living with Bob and her grandmother.

04:07.187 --> 04:13.191
[SPEAKER_01]: Shannon was petite with dark hair and described a sweet and kind, and because of this, she had many friends.

04:13.772 --> 04:20.376
[SPEAKER_01]: And after Bob had left her work, Shannon left home to meet some of those friends at a nearby river to swim and party.

04:21.117 --> 04:26.941
[SPEAKER_01]: But when Bob returned home from work at around 830 in the next morning, his daughter was nowhere to be found.

04:27.978 --> 04:36.620
[SPEAKER_01]: Panic team immediately began calling Shannon's friends and their parents, asking if they had seen his daughter, but no one knew where the 18-year-old was.

04:37.340 --> 04:41.960
[SPEAKER_01]: So Bob drove to the closest Michigan State police station to report his daughter missing.

04:42.901 --> 04:48.182
[SPEAKER_01]: Now authorities were looking for Shannon, and in the small community, tips and rumors were abundant.

04:49.202 --> 04:55.743
[SPEAKER_01]: One tipster told police as Shannon was hiding out in a local drug house, claiming that she didn't want to return to her father's home.

04:56.625 --> 05:01.550
[SPEAKER_01]: Now this was a plausible theory as Shannon had run away from her father's home before.

05:02.311 --> 05:14.523
[SPEAKER_01]: Two years prior, Shannon had gotten into an argument with Bob and left the house, but she had only gone to a girlfriend's house in the state for about two weeks, and she called her relatives to let them know where she was and that she was safe.

05:15.462 --> 05:22.229
[SPEAKER_01]: But when investigators went to the home, they found that this was in fact a different woman named Shannon, not the missing teenager.

05:23.170 --> 05:25.933
[SPEAKER_01]: Meanwhile, Bob continued to do what any parent would do.

05:26.433 --> 05:33.760
[SPEAKER_01]: He searched for his daughter, posting missing person's flyers all over town and hopes that it would lead to the tip that would find Shannon.

05:34.341 --> 05:36.483
[SPEAKER_01]: But there was still no sign of the missing girl.

05:37.404 --> 05:40.206
[SPEAKER_01]: and it would be months before there was any movement in the case.

05:41.026 --> 05:46.150
[SPEAKER_01]: Then, on Labor Day weekend of 1989, two young men were walking through the woods.

05:46.890 --> 05:51.533
[SPEAKER_01]: They had made their way off of any kind of beaten path when they noticed something on the forest floor.

05:52.434 --> 05:58.377
[SPEAKER_01]: It was two separate pieces of identification, and both had the name Shannon Citer's written on them.

05:59.298 --> 06:03.741
[SPEAKER_01]: These individuals notified the police and an officer was dispatched to investigate the scene.

06:04.773 --> 06:12.776
[SPEAKER_01]: This officer also located a pair of women's blue jeans near where the ID cards were located, but Shannon was still nowhere to be found.

06:13.856 --> 06:16.377
[SPEAKER_01]: However, investigators were familiar with the area.

06:17.077 --> 06:23.320
[SPEAKER_01]: It was known locally as the pit, and it was a well-known party in Hangout spot for teenagers in the town.

06:24.320 --> 06:28.962
[SPEAKER_01]: In fact, Shannon's father, Bob, and hung out in that same spot when he was a teenager.

06:30.150 --> 06:36.554
[SPEAKER_01]: Bob even searched the area himself after the items were discovered, looking for a body or shallow grave.

06:37.175 --> 06:39.837
[SPEAKER_01]: But like the police, his search came up empty.

06:40.997 --> 06:47.082
[SPEAKER_01]: Then, on October 15, 1989, Bob's greatest fears would become his reality.

06:47.960 --> 06:54.483
[SPEAKER_01]: While home with his then-girlfriend, his phone rang, and on the other line was the owner of a local bar in restaurant.

06:55.243 --> 07:00.106
[SPEAKER_01]: She informed Bob that a body had been found, telling him they believed it was Shannon.

07:01.086 --> 07:08.010
[SPEAKER_01]: You see, in Michigan, deer hunting season had begun, and apparently a hunter had been walking through the south end of the Manistine National Forest.

07:08.610 --> 07:12.712
[SPEAKER_01]: The exact same location were Shannon's ID cards that had been found a month prior.

07:17.602 --> 07:19.523
[SPEAKER_01]: skeletal remains of a human body.

07:20.484 --> 07:24.846
[SPEAKER_01]: Now, of course, a hundred did the right thing and he quickly notified the Michigan State police.

07:25.866 --> 07:31.829
[SPEAKER_01]: Bob arrived at the station right around midnight and investigators were waiting to greet the distress father.

07:32.710 --> 07:42.875
[SPEAKER_01]: While speaking with detectives, Bob learned that if he had walked only about 150 feet further into the tree line while searching the pit, he would have discovered Shannon's remains himself.

08:04.336 --> 08:09.178
[SPEAKER_01]: Shannon said her body was found almost three months of the day after her disappearance.

08:09.979 --> 08:13.140
[SPEAKER_01]: The local medical examiner was called into perform an autopsy.

08:13.880 --> 08:18.923
[SPEAKER_01]: Their report would show that Shannon had suffered from several injuries in multiple locations.

08:19.663 --> 08:25.246
[SPEAKER_01]: She had been brutally beaten, and the cause of death was determined to be blunt force trauma to the head.

08:26.246 --> 08:30.109
[SPEAKER_01]: There was also evidence to suggest that Shannon had been sexually assaulted.

08:30.829 --> 08:34.231
[SPEAKER_01]: As her remains were found on her back with her leg spread of heart.

08:34.992 --> 08:39.755
[SPEAKER_01]: Her shirt had been pulled up and her panties were found pulled down around only one leg.

08:40.536 --> 08:47.901
[SPEAKER_01]: But most assurbingly, the skin around her genitalia seemed to have been cut, suggesting that her body had been mutilated.

08:48.681 --> 08:53.004
[SPEAKER_01]: Police now knew that they were dealing with a killer, and Bob was now dealing with planning

08:55.028 --> 09:01.691
[SPEAKER_01]: In an interview with the television program Cole Case Files, Bob said that he couldn't bring himself to look at his daughter's remains.

09:02.211 --> 09:07.813
[SPEAKER_01]: And I have to tell you as a father, I can imagine that that's not the way that he would want to remember his daughter.

09:08.633 --> 09:11.795
[SPEAKER_01]: And when it came to picking Paul Bears, Bob was conflicted.

09:12.807 --> 09:20.951
[SPEAKER_01]: He believed the Shannon was killed by someone who knew her, and he worried that he might choose the person who took his child's life to participate in her funeral.

09:21.732 --> 09:25.333
[SPEAKER_01]: Instead, Shannon's casket was carried by her female cousins.

09:26.354 --> 09:36.179
[SPEAKER_01]: During the funeral, Bob warned the teenagers and attendance not to go out alone until Shannon's case was solved, saying there's somebody around here that kills people for whatever reason.

09:36.739 --> 09:41.181
[SPEAKER_01]: It may have been a one-time thing, but we may have another funeral and still not know who

09:42.947 --> 09:47.290
[SPEAKER_01]: friends also wrote letters to Shannon and they were placing her casket to be buried with her.

09:48.551 --> 09:54.676
[SPEAKER_01]: After the funeral, the Michigan State police behavioral analysis team got to work trying to build a profile of the killer.

09:55.756 --> 10:02.321
[SPEAKER_01]: The unit believed the Shannon was most likely killed by someone in her age group, potentially someone Shannon knew.

10:03.262 --> 10:09.447
[SPEAKER_01]: There was also the possibility that the murder was carried out by more than one person and they believed that what happened to Shannon

10:11.722 --> 10:15.164
[SPEAKER_01]: Now, in many cases, a killer may take a momento from their victim.

10:15.924 --> 10:17.565
[SPEAKER_01]: Shannon always wore a class ring.

10:18.266 --> 10:24.289
[SPEAKER_01]: Bob searched the house, but was unable to find it, and it also was not discovered on or near Shannon's body.

10:25.350 --> 10:27.851
[SPEAKER_01]: Meanwhile, the town of New Ego was on edge.

10:28.392 --> 10:32.954
[SPEAKER_01]: Again, this was a small community, and a well-liked innocent girl had been murdered.

10:33.955 --> 10:39.198
[SPEAKER_01]: Rumors swirl, especially amongst teenagers, and the killer could have potentially been anyone.

10:40.463 --> 10:47.306
[SPEAKER_01]: Investigators continued to work the case and were attempting to build this timeline, and a forensic entomologist was called in.

10:47.326 --> 10:54.648
[SPEAKER_01]: Now I know that we've talked about it before, but an entomologist examines what types of bugs and larva are found on a body.

10:55.509 --> 11:03.172
[SPEAKER_01]: They also look at what stage of the life cycle that those insects are in, and this can help to determine when a victim may have been killed.

11:04.145 --> 11:11.210
[SPEAKER_01]: In Shannon's case, the examination determined that she was killed within the last few weeks of July up until the first week of August.

11:12.431 --> 11:16.614
[SPEAKER_01]: Investigators also needed to know who Shannon was with before she died.

11:17.335 --> 11:22.158
[SPEAKER_01]: They were able to determine that she had been hanging out with a group of teenagers the night before she disappeared.

11:23.039 --> 11:26.241
[SPEAKER_01]: Each one of these kids were interviewed and subjected to polygraphs.

11:26.822 --> 11:31.345
[SPEAKER_01]: And with that information, detectives were finally able to get a clear picture of Shannon's

11:33.953 --> 11:36.936
[SPEAKER_01]: After Bob left her work, Shannon left to meet her friends.

11:37.896 --> 11:44.502
[SPEAKER_01]: Now these were local kids who had all gone to high school together, and there was three cars between a group of about 18 acres.

11:45.483 --> 11:48.826
[SPEAKER_01]: At some point they ended up at the spot in the woods known as the pit.

11:49.586 --> 11:53.690
[SPEAKER_01]: They spent a night drinking and smoking pot and driving along the trails in the woods.

11:54.879 --> 11:58.421
[SPEAKER_01]: But then, at some point in the evening, Shannon decided that she wanted to go home.

11:59.121 --> 12:02.062
[SPEAKER_01]: So she accepted a ride from Paul and Matt Jones.

12:02.823 --> 12:05.444
[SPEAKER_01]: Two brothers who had grown up just south of New Ego.

12:06.264 --> 12:10.086
[SPEAKER_01]: With the intention of going back to Shannon's house to drink some beers and watch movies.

12:10.886 --> 12:14.368
[SPEAKER_01]: But according to the Jones brothers, they just ended up dropping Shannon off.

12:15.308 --> 12:19.370
[SPEAKER_01]: In an interview with police, they described Shannon's house, telling investigators that

12:24.798 --> 12:29.020
[SPEAKER_01]: They also told police that the family dog was running back and forth in the front window.

12:30.140 --> 12:35.542
[SPEAKER_01]: To test this, investigators actually took the same route to the site's home that the kids would have taken.

12:36.382 --> 12:44.065
[SPEAKER_01]: When they arrived, they too could see the TV through the window, the porch light was on, and the dog was indeed running back and forth through the window.

12:45.065 --> 12:51.007
[SPEAKER_01]: Their story seemed legit, and then both Paul and Matt took polygraphs and past, so both would

12:53.641 --> 12:56.222
[SPEAKER_01]: as time went on the leads began to dry out.

12:56.903 --> 13:00.425
[SPEAKER_01]: Viewer tips were coming in and eventually the case would grow cold.

13:01.325 --> 13:04.206
[SPEAKER_01]: But Bob Cider wouldn't let his daughter be forgotten.

13:05.007 --> 13:07.368
[SPEAKER_01]: Instead, he fought to keep her case alive.

13:07.808 --> 13:15.932
[SPEAKER_01]: And in April of 1990, he commissioned a billboard with his own money off the interstate which read, who killed Shannon Ciders.

13:16.633 --> 13:20.515
[SPEAKER_01]: With the Michigan State Police number listed below in Big Bold fought.

13:21.262 --> 13:26.789
[SPEAKER_01]: Bob was also able to get about 40 local businesses to ask the same question on their signage.

13:27.290 --> 13:35.741
[SPEAKER_01]: So if you think about driving past a dairy queen instead of that sign, you know, telling you what this month's blizzard is, it's simply asked who killed Shannon Ciders.

13:36.717 --> 13:40.839
[SPEAKER_01]: By this point, Bob had spent about $10,000 on his solitary search.

13:41.620 --> 13:46.222
[SPEAKER_01]: He cashed out his life insurance policy and was struggling to pay for a headstone for his daughter.

13:47.043 --> 13:51.746
[SPEAKER_01]: At the time he said, I'm not going to pay for a wedding or presence from my grandchildren.

13:52.166 --> 13:55.108
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm spending it now instead of over the next 30 years.

13:56.028 --> 14:02.452
[SPEAKER_01]: Now, Bob's writers didn't know it yet, but it would take over 20 years to finally get the answers that he was looking for.

14:03.264 --> 14:06.445
[SPEAKER_01]: And folks, that is part one of our two-part case.

14:06.485 --> 14:09.127
[SPEAKER_01]: So we will be covering the rest of this on Thursday.

14:09.707 --> 14:15.429
[SPEAKER_01]: But I did want to share some initial thoughts with you some things that were going through my head as I was doing the research there.

14:16.250 --> 14:27.514
[SPEAKER_01]: And the thing that really stuck with me is just how badly I felt for Bob Sighters, to think that you've been taking care of this little girl her entire life.

14:28.055 --> 14:31.136
[SPEAKER_01]: You have gotten full custody, raised her,

14:32.016 --> 14:32.416
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, sure.

14:32.456 --> 14:37.119
[SPEAKER_01]: There's been problems along the way, arguments and things like that, but that's just comes with being a parent.

14:37.359 --> 14:42.562
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, I remember fighting with my mom plenty of times, you know, over things that, you know, you look back now.

14:42.742 --> 14:51.647
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, don't really matter, you know, but to be a parent who goes to work just like any other night and you don't think anything about it and you come home and your child is missing.

14:52.583 --> 14:54.023
[SPEAKER_01]: It's just absolutely terrifying.

14:54.744 --> 15:10.089
[SPEAKER_01]: And to know that they're missing for months at a time, like just thinking about what a constant sense of dread and like fearing your mind racing for months on head.

15:10.889 --> 15:13.510
[SPEAKER_01]: And sadly, his worst fears did come true.

15:13.750 --> 15:16.471
[SPEAKER_01]: He lost his daughter, Shannon is no longer with us.

15:17.591 --> 15:17.731
[SPEAKER_01]: So,

15:19.370 --> 15:22.613
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, being a father myself, just putting myself into shoes.

15:22.653 --> 15:38.827
[SPEAKER_01]: I just can't imagine the hurt and the pain that is his family and himself were going through with, you know, it's just, it's just hard to imagine, you know, then the other thing that you think about is Shannon, it's, she's 18, you know, just doing with normal, 18-year-old kids do.

15:39.487 --> 15:45.332
[SPEAKER_01]: They, you know, go out with their friends and, you know, drink a few beers, maybe smoke some pot every, you know, now in the

15:46.413 --> 16:04.676
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, but this is stuff that, you know, for a lot of kids, it's just part of, you know, growing up and it's like a phase that you go through and, you know, to think that She just wanted to go out and have a good time, you know, she just wanted to go hang out with her friends and she never got to come home is is absolutely heartbreaking.

16:04.956 --> 16:05.076
[SPEAKER_01]: So

16:05.924 --> 16:21.087
[SPEAKER_01]: I am very excited to go over part two and kind of break down how the story comes to a close, but as always we want to hear from you, the listeners, the locksmiths, what is you know, your opinion of this case so far, where does the murder of Shannon Cider's fall on your devil test?

16:30.609 --> 16:32.410
[SPEAKER_01]: out with you, it gets to know you a little bit better.

16:33.030 --> 16:33.911
[SPEAKER_01]: Spend some time with you.

16:34.011 --> 16:36.292
[SPEAKER_01]: Say it all the time, but it is the best place on the internet.

16:36.692 --> 16:40.153
[SPEAKER_01]: Also special shout out to friend of the podcast Angel.

16:40.694 --> 16:43.055
[SPEAKER_01]: She's been a member of our community forever.

16:43.175 --> 16:47.717
[SPEAKER_01]: She is also the host of the Glow podcast, which is GLOE.

16:48.177 --> 16:52.099
[SPEAKER_01]: You can find that on Instagram at the ModCoSC.

16:52.159 --> 16:53.880
[SPEAKER_01]: That's at DMOD.

16:54.780 --> 17:13.885
[SPEAKER_01]: C-O-S-C, but Angel has agreed to be kind of our birthday groups are that we were talking about the last episode, so we're currently working on ways that we can kind of get everybody's birthday information there so we can have those celebrations online again and just find more ways to make our community really feel like just that.

17:14.065 --> 17:15.666
[SPEAKER_01]: So thank you for being willing to

17:21.194 --> 17:23.355
[SPEAKER_01]: And you'll know that we love hearing from you.

17:23.515 --> 17:30.500
[SPEAKER_01]: And so I did want to take the time, even though this is usually a Olivia's job, I wanted to go ahead and read a Spotify comment that was left for us.

17:30.540 --> 17:36.964
[SPEAKER_01]: So this comment actually came from one of our true crime for the short on time episodes called Murder in Amish Country.

17:37.724 --> 17:43.428
[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know if you're familiar with that, but unfortunately someone from the secular world came into this community.

17:43.448 --> 17:46.730
[SPEAKER_01]: I believe it was in Pennsylvania and took a woman's life.

17:48.271 --> 18:01.987
[SPEAKER_01]: It was a very sad story, and especially with this certain group of people being affected in this community, it's things like this don't happen a whole lot, and Sephara on Spotify said, this one is so sad to me.

18:02.448 --> 18:05.892
[SPEAKER_01]: He was someone that they trusted from the secular world and he betrayed them.

18:06.412 --> 18:28.063
[SPEAKER_01]: I feel horrible for their ominous community, and I could not agree with you more, you know, when you are living in that kind of community and you are so isolated, and not just, you know, physically, right, or space-wise, but when we think about mentality or the way that we live, you know, that community is isolated from a lot of the, the more modern secular world, right?

18:28.443 --> 18:32.045
[SPEAKER_01]: And so when you do have, you know, people that you trust,

18:33.366 --> 18:38.111
[SPEAKER_01]: When that trust is broken, it's got to hurt in a way that, you know, a lot of people may not be able to relate to.

18:38.191 --> 18:43.437
[SPEAKER_01]: So I did want to say it's a very thank you for leaving that comment and giving us your input.

18:43.537 --> 18:45.379
[SPEAKER_01]: We always love hearing from you.
